I need help with a sound effect...SOLVED!!

Can someone help me with a simple sound effect i can't seem to get right...and should be able too.

Is there a synth patch somewhere (hopefully in SONAR) that makes that computer graphic sound or sound when letters or words scroll across a computer screen?  It has the tech sound almost like R2D2...

THANKS!!

I assume he was trying to make or synthesize his own example rather than simply sampling something.

I know jimbo is probably not in a position to do that sort of thing because he is doing commercial work and everything needs a "provenance" for clearance.

I thought perhaps he could post an example and we might be able to conjure up a recipe for it.

    all the best,

    Hi Jim

If you're not averse to using audio samples, there are loads of free .wav files at The Freesound Project - search 'Computer' or 'Electrictronic sounds' and you're bound to find something usable.

You could try sampling some R2D2, then get cut out the sounds near to what you want and then trigger them with a suitable rhythmic pattern.

    EDIT: Here's a YouTube compilation of R2D2

There's a couple of different sounds used. Some use what sounds like the sound very noisy computer keyboards (the old clicky sound like the old ADM3 terminals) make. Some use what sounds like a cricket pitched up. Try that - get a cricket sample and pitch shift that up. I know the Sony 10 cd sound effects sample set has some cricket sounds. A possible way to synthesize that might be to have a series of short note pulses (try using a sine or square wave) and muck about with the attack and decay times.

Hey Guys,  Thanks for the ideas.  The cricket sounds interesting.  I've been looking for a sample to post,  but as usual,  I can't seem to find an example.  Of course if i was not looking for it I'd run across it all day.

I'm playing sound mixer today 'cause a client is in a bind with no budget.  Her normal mixer is out making money.  i'm hoping that i can find it in a synth, cause that would be way easier for me.

    Thanks again!

You might try searching for "teletype machine" as that's what gets used in movies quite often when "computer generated" words type out across the screen.

A little while back I needed a similar sound. I ended up using the vibraphone in the TTS-1 synth in Sonar.  I used rapid, same-velocity notes (the machine-gun effect) and kept it subtle. I forget which note, but I'm sure you can find a suitable one :)

Do you have access to some form of FM synth (maybe an old DX7) or FM7? That might work.

If you have DropZone, there are some patches called Blipz in the Multisamples file under Drums. See if they will work.

This is the greatest place in the world...

I used the Dropzone  Blipz with the TTS1 vibraphone.  Added a little Sonitus fx (modulator - "out of the blue" patch.)  And it sounds great!

You guys made me look like I know what I'm doing!!

I can't post a link because it is a demo for a documentry series that is being pitched to A&E, Discovery etc...I signed a "non-disclosure" type thing.  When I do these things my wife makes fun of me and tells the children not to say anthing about dad's work (not that they even care).  She says "He's working on Operaton Eagle-Claw"  and rolls her eyes.

I guess I could put the sfx on soundcloud, but I'm not sure the effect by itself is interesting.

    But THANKS for the help.

Hey Rbh your time frames definately do not line up. About a decade out I am afraid. The DX 7 was not really thought of when Star Wars was made. It was the ARP 2600 plus some special voice effects as well.

    R2D2 was lucky.

All they had to create my built-in sounds was 2 halves of a coconut shell, a rasp across some tin-plate, a duck whistle and a rubber band.

    yes to this...

A suggestion might be to check with some collectors of old adding machines and the like as well..there were a few of these old guys that may have some of the earlier keyboards and such with clicky, electronicy sounds as well...

If you're looking for some of these old sounds, particularly if you want to sample your own, a good source would be a hamfest (ham radio swapmeet/flea market). You might just find someone with an old Model 33 Teletype machine for sale.

Another good source for already sampled sounds is the Sony Pictures Sound Effects Series. It comes in 3 versions: discs 1-5, discs 6-10, and all 10 discs in one box. Current US price $469.95. There are some really cool and diverse effects on there. See:

    http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/sfxseries1-10

And here's a link to the license agreement. It says for Acid loops but I'd assume that it would also apply to the 10 cd effects set:

    http://www.sonycreativeso...oop_libraries/eula.asp

As to Star Wars sounds and how they were achieved, the light sabre sound when one sabre hits another is a sample of someone hitting a guy wire for an antenna tower.

Thanks for clearing up my time frame... Now that I think about it...Start Wars came out when I was about 15 -17. and I remember playing an early dx-7...around 22 -23 somewhere in there.
