32bit X1 on W7 or 64bit X1 on W7???
On the surface it may sound like a stupid question, or it may actually be a stupid question.... I've got a decent Intel Quad Core PC with 4GB memory, and because I have an interface which only had drivers up to XP, I installed 32bit XP on it and installed Sonar X1. Well, I'm fed up with the interface and will be moving to something which supports W7. My real question is: are there advantages to running 32bit W7 (aside from addressing more memory) versus 64bit W7? My concerns are compatiblity with my old Jamstix 2.5 and any other issues with plug-ins (Cakewalk included) which either don't exist in the 64bit world or are a bit flakey. I'm kind of leaning toward either a Zoom R16 (lot's of mic inputs, remote recording, and control surface) or a Cakewalk VS 20 (control surface, guitar oriented, almost guaranteed to work with X1). However, the real question comes back to any are there any gotcha's with 64bit X1 on W7 versus 32bit X1? Thanks for any advice.

32 is a safe bet. Some of my drum loops won't play in 64, and I'm seeing more and more about some compatibility issues. They may be addressing in the next update, I'm not sure. My experience and opinion, 32 is a safe bet, 64 may do some things better, but it's a crap shoot.

64 bit for me. Everything will be 64bit soon might as well be future proofed. I have had no issues being on 64 bit either and still use a few 32bit plugs with no issue. You could always just install both 32 and 64 bit also I know alot of users here have. I personally am only running 64bit now and did not even bother installing 32 bit version.

I say go for a 64 bit OS you can still use 32 bit Sonar as Sykodelic said. But atleast you will have the option of using 64 bit Sonar as well and accessing more RAM. I jumped on board the 64 bit bandwagon with Vista (came with a free upgrade to Windows 7) and aside from some annoying driver issues (Tascam) which are no resolved I've had hardly any issues. IK plugs are now 64 bit, I still run Addictive Drums which is 32 bit, actually I think addictive drums may be one of my only 32 bit plugs left

I have both and can see the advantages and disadvantages. If you can, just install both of them.

Just got paid I think we both misinterpreted his question. After rereading it I think he is talking about the windows install and not sonar in which case I would just install the 64bit version. If he is speaking of sonar I agree with you install both if you have any doubt

If he is speaking of sonar I agree with you install both if you have any doubt @sykodelic - when I was first writing, I was in fact thinking about the 2 versions of W7, but I re-worded my message before posting when I realized that both versions of X1 could be installed in 64bit W7. I was more concerned with Jamstix 2.5 32bit and Dim Pro 32bit versus 64bit - things like that. I should check to see if the latest Jamstix is 64bit compatible. It's damn frustrating to finally have a nice computer and X1 Producer, but still not have a decent (but affordable) audio interface. And as I mentioned before, for about the same money I could have a VS 20 (instant gratification) or a used R16 - more room to grow.

I think jamstix is only 32 bit still but I have heard rumors a 64 bit version is in the works and will be a free update.

If it were me (and it is what I did) I'd install the 64 bit version of Windows for sure. At this point there are 64 drivers for pretty much everything. I installed 64 bit version of Sonar and have had no problems. My suggestion is try it. Try the devices you're not confident on. If they don't work you can uninstall Sonar and install the 32 bit version. In my opinion it's at least worth the try. All future products will be 64 bit so you'll have to make the jump eventually. Why put it off. Just my two cents worth.

Pbognar: Are you saying you will be getting a new machine? With a quad core I'd be surprised if it didn't qualify for Win 7 64 bit. Of course I may be wrong, and I don't know the make of your machine. You could go to Microsoft and download the Win 7 adviser program. I just upgraded my 4 year old dual core HP. A new hard drive and Win 7 allows me to dual boot Vista/Win 7 and I have had no problems with Win 7 at all. I added more ram (now 8). I'm only a casual hobby user of Sonar and I haven't reinstalled everything yet but works fine - so I'd think you'd get decent mileage out of the quad core.

For me, I needed 64bit to keep up with the CPU/RAM demands that my softsynths desire. I guess if you don't need that, and don't see it happening anytime in the future because you are mainly and analog guy, then you are safe.

No - the machine if fully capable of running W7. The problem was that there were no W7 drivers for my existing audio interface.
