Video Monitor Size Recommendations?
I got a new computer and now I'm looking at bigger monitors. My current monitor is a widesccreen 21" and shows a lot of tracks but not all at once. It will show about 19 trax at full size and about 31 at the reduced size. But I often use lots of soft synths, session drummer, etc. and find I need more tracks and I would like to see them all at once. Does anyone know how many trax you can view on a 24" or 27" monitor. Maybe I should just get another 21" monitor and strectch the mixer across the 2 screens. Any imput on this topic would be appreciated.

Yes, Two screens is the way to go. Wide screen monitors are a bit of a scam, I have a 17" monitor that is 10.5 inches tall and I also have a 20" wide screen that is also 10.5 inches tall. Monitors are measured on the diagonal. A 20" sounds a heck of a lot bigger than a 17" but if it's a wide screen it is not going to show anymore vertically. Regular 17" = 10.5 x 13" = $ 120 W Screen 20" = 10.5 x 17 " = $ 200 nd extra 4" for 2x the money? So for track count what you want is something deeper. like a 19" , not wider. It is nice to put the mixer up on another screen. You will also need a video card that supports 2 screens. My son uses a 32" TV.

Also look at the resolution. you should go for something with 1920x1080 as a minimum, but ideally 1920x1200 if you are wanting to view more tracks.

Its not just the size that will let you view more on the screen. You need a higher resolution as well otherwise you won't have more on the display, it will just be bigger.

The general consensus is the bigger the better. However, you need to consider the effect large video monitors have on audio monitoring. Even if the screens do not actually block direct line-of-sight to your speakers, they can still profoundly affect frequency response.

Another thing to consider for your average bedroom studio is the amount of heat generated by modern monitors. They're great in winter (I never need the CH switched on in mine) but in summer the cumulative effect of the monitors & other equipment can become quite unbearable, even in rainy old England.

From searching around the forum, it seems like having a resolution of 1920x1080 is critical to seeing the new X1 properly. Is this true? (I'm still happily using 8.5)

JV1 From searching around the forum, it seems like having a resolution of 1920x1080 is critical to seeing the new X1 properly. Is this true? (I'm still happily using 8.5) XI, at a push, could be used at 1280x800 which is the maximum resolution on my lap top, but it is a pain (I can only view four tracks with expanded track headers at this resolution.) As a rue of thumb I would say X1 needs about 1.5 times the resolution 8.5 did to dispaly a similar amount of information. Screen sets let you work around this limitation. If you are buying a new monitor I would recommend 1920x1080 as a minimum sizs unless you are particulary impoverished or short of space.
