What are some ways to block sound from the sides of a condensor mic?

I have an issue in which my studio room has windows on opposing sides and my microphone is set-up near the center of the room.  A lot of sound penetrate through the windows but I do not want to cover them for natural lighting reasons.  Is there something I can set-up to block sound from the sides of the mic?

There is a lot of sense in using a dynamic Mic that sounds like a nice condenser and getting close onto it. (with a good pop filter of course) Noisy environments generally require closer micing.

Another option is can you put your main mic into figure 8 pattern. Set it up so the windows are pointing into the nulls of the figure 8 pattern. If you deaden the room down and control the sound in the area opposite to you (ie the other side of pickup on the figure 8 pattern) then you might get a better result.

Do you really have to record in the middle of the room?

This is possibly one of the worst areas in which to set up a mic.

Try and set up in a corner, facing outwards with duvets hanging on the 2 walls behind you.

I love it Bristol Here I am trying to solve the problem in the middle of the room  and you just solve the problem by moving the mic.

Put up some heavy duvets on the two walls in a corner and if you can, a third soft baffle preferably 6 feet high in front of the mic to complete the triangle. All you need in there is a music stand with a light on it.

I have always got pretty good vocals that way. I have got two book cases on the walls in the corner and they make great diffusers and stop a lot of unwanted reflection. They are ideal for forming two sides of a triangular vocal booth. I think the triangular shape makes for quite a good vocal sound inside the area. Putting a light  acoustic panel on the top to form a roof will minimise any reflections going up to a hard ceiling and back down.

Also if you set up a downward expander nicely on the way into your DAW, you can easily remove any room tone and the expanders operation can be quite transparent.

    Hi Jeff.

A little bit of lateral thinking usually comes to my aid at some point during the day.

Side issue: I  met up with our mutual friend Norrie in Scotland last week. What a thoroughly delightful chap he is!

Just thinking out loud.  I wonder if there would be a mid-side technique where you would reverse the polarity of a copy of the side mic and blend it in to cancel.

I always go for the complicated scenario - it's a problem I have.

Hanging some moving blankets can help block out the room sound.
