Ok. why do non-musicians just not "get it?"
I mentioned earlier that I'm in a drama production that we're putting together for this fall. it's a "big" production as far as we're concerned - we've never done anything before this that lasted more than 20 min and most of the stuff we do is only 5 minutes or so long with usually no more than 1/2 dozen people on stage. this is a 90 minute production and has 2 actors singing solos in it - the 2 main characters, one female lead and one male lead. I'm the male lead. we don't have a band - so the songs being performed will be against accompaniment tracks. however, I can't find an accompaniment track for the song I'm singing, so I tell the director that it's just not availble, and that we'll have to record one. she (the director) says to me, "ya know, sometimes I use Audacity to remove the vocals of a song for practicing with - can't we just do that?"

Here's what to do Beag, ol pal. Do exactly as she suggests. And then let her (and you) hear the results...one of you is bound to be mighty chagrined. I'm betting her;-)

Ah... I thought this about how "others" don't understand why you need 12-20 guitars. (I can't believe she had the audacity to say such a thing!)
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

I can see why you might be frustrated. At least it seems like you have some time to get things together. I have vocal cancelling on my Roland Juno stage and it really doesn't work well as you know. Maybe in a rare case it will work but usually it leaves some vocal "leftovers" and greatly diminishes quality. I have had good luck with accompaniment tracks on Itunes. Have you tried there? WalMarts Mp3 site also has some good ones depending on what you are looking for. I never like using accompaniment tracks though and would rather just have a piano or an acoustic. If thats all I could get. Just recently I was in a place where I wasn't in charge and was following the program they had. Right in the middle of a set the accompanimant CD started skipping and I am up front with two other vocalists. We killed the thing and ended up singing accapello for the last two songs. It ended up going really well........

my ol' pal - I'm afraid she wouldn't realize that it's not "good enough" and I'd be embarrassed to sing with it!!! Craig - that's my next question! actually, I thought it was funny, I mentioned to a guitarist (on this forum) that I have 3 keyboards and he said - "why in the world would you need 3 keyboards???" I asked him how many guitars he had.... Tim - yes, I've looked on itunes, walmart, mardels, everywhere. this one does not exist. it's Steven Curtis Chapman "Not Home Yet." it wasn't a big hit of his, so they didn't make an accomp. track for it. since this is a 90 minute production play and we only have 2 songs in the whole thing, it wouldn't be very easy to get a pianist or acoustic guitarist to sit around the whole time for those 2 tunes. plus - the lead female might be accompanying herself on acoustic anyway, so that would be only 1 song for the whole play. funny story - I probably would have done the same thing!

Janet Can you find the sheet music for it? Or chords at least? That's just the kind of thing a musician would say. Far too practical. Let's not forget Reece is talking about 'Drama' production here...

JB Janet - yes, I have the sheet music for it. currently my plan is to ask the church band to learn it and let me record them - I just came up with that plan since my last post above, but I haven't talked to the Worship minister yet.

thanks for the offer, Karyn! I think the church band will probably do it for me and I can record them. I think I have enough inputs for them with my (relatively) new MOTU Ultralite. if that falls thru, I will certainly take you up on the offer tho!!! and even tho there's no mention of an Am tuned cowbell, I'm sure I could write a part in for you!

If you're going to record one song, you should do them both. They will be noticably different. Since they are lead parts they should match in feel.
