Pro Tools 9 on Ebay
I've seen several high volume Ebay sellers selling Pro Tool 9 at $200 dollars below street price. It seems they are selling copies that have been bundled with hardware separately with an authorized iLock. From what I gather, that Avid is ignoring the practice and if someone wants to sell their iLock license then Avid is cool with that. However, I don't want to get stuck with no way to upgrade and possibly no support (even though, I haven't used anyone's customer support in 18 plus years.) The seller advertises that the software is complete and upgradeable on their Ebay ad. They've got almost perfect customer service scores. Has anyone heard any horror stories about this? I run a clean ship but I wouldn't mind saving myself some money if I can.

well - I started to post some stuff but I decided it might be best if I didn't. I haven't heard about this practice, but it seems a little fishy to me, even if Avid "looks the other way." I would understand your temptation, tho. $200 below retail is quite a carrot.

I think what they are doing is possibly buying factory seconds or broken boxes of hardware and software combo packages and parceling out the components separately. From everything I have found on the Internet, AVID doesn't care if you sell the license they will transfer it. The Ebay ad definitely says the software is not tied to hardware, it comes with a dongle and a full upgrade path. In fact, I gather that you can download the software from AVID. It just doesn't work without the license installed on the iLock dongle. I guess it's up to me to as to whether or not I want to pay my money and take my chances.

Go with what you feel like doing. For myself, I've not understood the need for more than 1 DAW. I picked SONAR (@ SPE7 for the duration) with the idea that anything else is redundant and can sod off

If I get someone who wants to record and they want to use the Pro Tools environment, I'll be ready. You can't fight the brand recognition. SONAR will be my platform of choice, but if I have to throw the Pro Tools card, I'll have it to throw.

If you ask questions of the seller and he replies, if you then go ahead and purchase you will get your money back if he answers anything you asked falsely and you are not happy with your purchase. Provided as you say the seller has an established good track record over a good period of time I'd say you'd be OK to go ahead with this. You have to ask yourself is the saving worth the hit I may take, if you feel it still smells bad after that amount of appraisal then it probably is.

All true but you should ask yourself the biggest question of them all...WHY DO he or She or all those Pro Tools users want to SELL Their Softwares? Because Pro Tools are outdate crap software in x32 and now many have finally come to same conclutions! Trust me save your money and don't buy it. Honestly, I have used Pro Tools HD in many studios over the years and I wouldn't want it even if you gave me the whole HD system for free and need to ues it and was not allowed to sell it. Lord, what are you going to use Pro Tools for that you can't do better in all other DAW Softwares? You can Mix and record better and with higher quality in SONAR X1, Cubase 6, Nuendo, LOGIC PRO, STUDIO ONE and so forth...

freddie - I know you're a big sonar advocate (dare I say "fanboi"?) but whether PT9 is crap or not has nothing to do with modbod's question about whether he should buy the discounted version from this ebay seller. Dave already knows he WANTS PT9, he is just trying to find the best cost effective way to get it.

Dave already knows he WANTS PT9, he is just trying to find the best cost effective way to get it. I wouldn't go ebay for it, not things like DAWs, cars, house etc.. Buy it from the local dealer or a legit online Internet Store. Best Regards Freddie
