Need help reducing CPU usage.

First the facts.

Win7 Pro
SONAR X1b
3G Ram
M-Audio ASIO mode

Tracks: 1 SD3, 6 Rapture

My CPU meters are peaking and the audio starts cracking. I write my tracks a few measures at a time, by hand, with staff/step view. Freezing/Unfreezing doesn't help as the synths are still in memory. I can't bounce to audio because then I can't arrange. My PC is not fitted for memory upgrades. The sad thing is, I'm only just past the intro and build-up. I haven't even gotten into the real song yet and I'll need about 4-5 more synths to do it, not to mention effects, strips and the like.

1.) Raising your ASIO buffers will reduce your CPU.
2.) Recording in 44.1kHz and not 88 or 96kHz will reduce your CPU load
3.) Freezing your synths and other tracks will reduce your CPU.
4.) Turn off all background processes that are not needed. (shouldn't need to do this with pc's 5 years or newer though in my opinion).

My PC is not fitted for memory upgrades

Memory or lack of it,  has nothing to do with your CPU.

Thanks. My buffers are set pretty high as is (already considered this) and I am recording at 44.1kHz.

Freezing doesn't seem to be an option and is acting quite odd anyway. Perhaps you may have some insight? Here's what's going on...

I freeze the session drummer 3 folder group. It does it's thing and generates audio and everything is marked *. On playback, I get both the audio and the result of the midi. It's doubled. If I mute the midi track, the whole thing get's muted. I Have echo off always unless I really need it.

    What's that about?

Sounds like your you have session drummer 3  in play mode dude. Click Stop in the session drummers GUI.
Freeze does work and when you freeze, it doesnt play the frozen and non frozen (Midi data) at the same time, because its all one thing.
So its either that, or your doing some wacky freeze dry techniques :)

I've noticed that Rapture seems to run all of it's instances on the same cpu core (assuming your running multi core...) I show 8 cpu's in X1b and have 4gmem, still after several rapture tracks (some patches are worse than others) I'm maxing out one cpu and getting crackling.

You might try replacing Rapture with Dim or something to see if that helps.

It was all so different, before everything changed...

Ok, I solved the doubling thing. Aparently, I -did- have Play mode on in SD3. Through experimentation, I found that Rapture still uses a lot of system resources. I saved the song under a new name and replaced all the Raptures with NEXUS 2 and my CPU usage went down to next to nothing. So it looks like I'm going to have to live with write/freeze/unfreeze/write-more method. It's clunky but works.

With only 6 or 7 tracks, I'm not sure you have a cpu problem unless its more than 3 gens old. If you're running W7 on only 3gb ram, it's more likely you're choking for more memory. What cpu/mobo are you using? Is it dual channel or triple channel?
