Help With Midi Editing For A Session Tomorrow Please ?

Hi all a couple of quick questions about midi editing if you could please help ?

I cant seem to get use to editing midi in X1 producer so I have been using 8.53 Producer for midi and then loading the session in X1 producer

So Ive been working with a drummer hes using my TD-20 to play with samples from Steven Slate he was adamant about playing to a click but his timing has been so bad that Ive had to break it down in to very small sections then drop him in and quantize each bit

I have found though that he has been hitting for instance a kick drum on top of were a kick drum is and its made it sound louder than the previous kicks because obviously its 2 kick drums being hit at exactly the same time

( should have noticed he had done this before I bounced it to clips and moved on to the guitar tracking but I didn't so I am trying to sort it now )

Is there a way I can see quickly the notes that are hidden behind what I have on screen ? I know there there because I can hear them but the only way I can think to edit it is to listen to each one then delete the note but this could take some time and I am looking for a quicker way if there is one ?

Is there a way to see it as a layer or something ?

The second question is whenever I go to use the draw tool in X1 it seems to always make the midi note a full measure of the bar.

How do I change the length of the midi not for when I draw the notes in ?

Thanks for all the help in advance :)

If you are talking about MIDI events and not audio, can you open the Event List and look for notes that are at the same time, or close to the same time?

Thanks for the reply ! Yeah its midi events not audio just what you see on the PRV but I know there is notes hidden in the back ground.

Where do I find the even list ?

Any Idea on how to change the duration of a drawn midi note aswell ?

    Thanks for the help

1-In the main Track View of Sonar (the default view) go to Views and select Event List.
2-In Piano Roll, you can change duration by selecting the Smart Tool (the one that looks like a star) and putting your mouse over the end of the note.  You can then drag it to make it longer or shorter.  (You can also quantize afterwards if you think you didn't drag it exactly right.)
3-SUGGESTION:  This is slow, but in Staff view or Piano Roll view, you can right click a note, and then change it up or down a few steps to see if there is another note behind it.  For example, if the note is C3, click the spinner to move it up or down to reveal a note behind it.  Then you can delete one, move one back where it goes, etc.

This isn't what you asked, but I would 86 the drummer and just program Session Drummer 3.  If you are a good MIDI drum programmer, you can create the part in a 1/10 of the time it would take to fix the mess you've got.  If you're not a good drum programmer, get some MIDI loops.  I've been there and feel your pain.

In my opinion, simple drum parts are always in good taste.  Complex ones can be cool if you know what you're doing, but, when in doubt, keep it basic.

    Hi Norrie-

There's a CAL script called "UNDUPE.CAL" that might help. In 8.5.3 you get there under Process > Run CAL, but I'm sure it's still available in X1 somewhere.

Susan, That is great information!  Thanks.

Norrie, Select the range you want to work on and then, in the main (Track) view, go to Process | Run CAL. Select UNDUPE.CAL
