SONAR 8.5 crashing!! Why?

What the heck is going on with 8.5. I've never had crashing with it. I haven't used it extensively for about a month now and I come back to work on a project, and it starts crashing.

The project so far consists of EZ Drummer, two acoustic guitar tracks and a vocal track. Just a couple of reverbs in the FX bins.

At first it was crashing when I was working in VVocal. I had Perfect Space reverb on one track, which is the only thing different from what I usually have used with no crashes. So I turned that reverb off, and tried VVocal a few more times with no crashes. Don't know if that was a coincidence or not.

Then I started working with some loops in the Media Browser, which I rarely use if ever. It was working fine for a while, then crashed when I was working with a loop in SONAR, that I had moved from the Media Browser.

Nothing has changed about my computer or setup. So, this is strange to me. Any help is appreciated.

It's possible your project has become corrupt.

This happens from time to time with no immediate reason as to why.

Seeing as you only have a small nuber of tracks going, I'd be inclined to start a brand new project and copy/paste your tracks from the old to the new.

In fact, you should be able to manage having both projects open simultaneously and just drag & drop.

One thing - Perfect Space is a cpu hungry 'verb - you'll get better mileage from it by sticking it on its own bus and use a send from your track(s). Make sure it's set to 100% wet if you do this.

You  did not mention your computer specs but we will assume it's up to date and should be able to run plug in etc. If your computer is not up to it you might need to do some housekeeping.
    1. NO INTERNET or wireless cards
    2. Defrag hard drive and check for space less than 50% is best
    3. Run DPCLAT meter and check for unwanted interference.
    4. Use the latest drivers for your audio interface

Hey, thanks for the tips. The reference to DPC Latency meter reminded me about my motherboard latency issues. The meter kept spiking into the yellow intermittently. I checked and found I was one bios version behind, so I updated that and the latency meter is practically flat now. Much better. Don't know if this is what was causing crashes or not, but we'll see. I'll let you know. Thanks again.

OK, that didn't fix the problem. In fact now it's gotten even worse. I keep getting fatal errors, and when prompted to save the file before closing, it says "Cannot write file. Disk may be full." But most of my 650 gb harddrive is free ... like 480 gb or something.

I searched the problem on the forum where suggestions included deleting Aud.ini and upping the disk buffer in Aud.ini. I tried both.

So in this project I moved all my wave file into a newly created project. And now, while it didn't crash on it's on yet, as soon as I went to manually save my progress, I got this message:
    Error - Unhandled Exception. A fatal error has occured. Module: C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR 8.5 Producer\SONARPDR.exe
A crash dump file has been created here .... etc.
    Exception code: c0000005
    Address: 00A16487:0012E488:0012E250

Then it says SONAR is about to close unexpectedly. Should it save the file. When I hit yes, it gives me the Disk full message. When I hit OK there, it says: File Recovery: Unable to write recovery file.

Does anyone have a clue what is happening here? The only thing different I'm doing with this project that I don't normally do is using some loop files and pulling them in through the media browser within SONAR.

UPDATE: I opened another projects and edited it some, and it saved just fine. I opened the problem project up again, closed the media browser window, hit save, and it saved fine. I tried importing the loop through the File/Import menu, and the loop inserted fine, as it did with the media browser. But as soon as I hit save once the loop was imported, I got the fatal error again. What does that mean? Bad loops? These are original, store bought loops - Smart Loops, so I don't get it.

Mark, open a support ticket with CW and send them your minidump. They'll be able to tell you why you're crashing.

A few possible scenarios come to mind:

    1. A misbehaving plugin. Try bringing up the project in safe mode and see if it still crashes. Sometimes, this can be resolved by simply removing the plugin, saving the project, re-opening the project and re-inserting the plugin.

    2. A corrupt audio file. This can be time-consuming to nail down. One strategy is to open a new project and import the files into it. If one of them is corrupt, the import will likely fail and SONAR will tell you which one it is. If you find a corrupt file, rename it rather than deleting it in case there is an unmapped badspot on your drive.

    3. A corrupt picture cache. This one's easy to test and fix. Just delete everything in your picture cache.

    4. A corrupt project (.cwp) file. Hate when this happens, because the only fix is to create a new project and import the files into it.

Thanks. I had already tried most of those things. I opened a support ticket, but it didn't have a place to upload the minidump. Guess they'll ask for it if they need it. I appreciate your suggestions.

Tell them you have a minidump when you get a reply on your ticket. They'll provide you with a link where you can copy the dump file.
