The Battle of the Bug

It's been a rough couple of weeks here. Ever see the movie Starship Troopers? Two weeks ago I was invaded by Aliens while sleeping. I noticed blood smears everywhere and could not tell what they were from. Then I broke out in a rash all over my body. Specialists were called in and consulted and chemical warfare was the decided weapon of choice. I finally caught and identified the Aliens and the war began. After two weeks of fighting with Kryogenic -210 degree guns, high temp. steam, Isopropyl Alcohol, and dangerous insectisides I finally have the Aliens at bay. I hope, nay, I pray... that the battle of the BedBug has been won!

back in the day DDT practically wiped them out as well as malaria..... now since DDT has been banned, they are both back with a vengeance.

Bedbugs are at epidemic levels in some areas, and malaria now kills about a million people a year.

I travel and have to use motels. First thing I do is check the room for the signs of the invaders.

DDT was used when I was a kid. We used to ride behind the mosquito fogger truck. Junk science and a scare book (Silent Spring...with no real research behind the claims) got it banned and now people are bothered by the bugs it can easily control and dying from the diseases some of them carry. BTW...they just found out that bedbugs can carry dangerous diseases to humans.

Remember, the war isn't over until you capture that big bug with all the intelligence...  (I hear they like to hide in your pantries.)

It's a pretty tough call when the cure is as bad as the disease. Bedbugs as disease carriers is the major concern. Nasty little Vampires from hell is what they are. They can also cause anemia. I got munched pretty bad before I figured out what it was.
Having never had or seen an infestation I wasn't sure until I woke up and saw them. They infested my solid mahogany waterbed frame and headboard. They kept coming back after two treatments. I had to comepletely tear the bedroom apart. It's still a bit toxic up there. I had to raise the bed frame up off the floor and put traps on the legs. Since the bed frame weighs close to 250 lbs, taking it apart is lot of work. Death to the brain bug!

Since they are attracted to CO2, I saw a BB trap that consists of a small chunk of dry ice (sold at Walmart) in a tub and a ramp for them to climb. They are attracted to the CO2 which is very strong on the floor, and they climb up and fall in..... and can't get out.

That would get some of them, and was recommended as a means to check to see if there were any BB in the  room without playing the role of BB bait yourself.

they are very hard to eradicate. best of luck.

I have started using the online http://bedbugregistry.com/ to see if the place is on the list as contaminated or not before I book a night...then I still do a room check of the mattress and other things before I settle in.

Headed to DC this weekend.... the motel is indicated as clean... but I will check the room regardless.

I guess I misread something.  I though the battle had been won.  I guess not and the congrats are premature.  Well, good luck.  I hope I can resend congrats to you in the very near future.

Yes the CO2 thing, I've been studieing up on them. I spent the entire morning filling every little seam and crack in my headboard with glue so they have no place to hide. I took off the back panel of wood to reglue it and sure enough there amoung the multitude of dead ones was one still very much alive. I've got traps on the bed legs and will set double sided sticky tape in strategic spots. That's the only bug I've seen for the last four days. Tommorrow, I steam the carpet!
