This is gonna be one "hot" 4th of July!!!

Because today, at about 3pm, our central air went totally Kaput!!  Not just partly kaput.  Totally.  New system required.  Realistic install time two weeks.  Heat index of at least 100 degrees daily.  Yummm.  Just like my childhood.  Only no attic fan.  I quite literally have an ice pack on my noggin right now.  Let's grill some brats!!!

Remember the good ol' days when things would last 25 years? Our AC is 9 years old and they are telling me it has to be replaced. It has a pinhole leak in the compressor (?) and it's more to fix than to replace the entire unit (inside and out). We had them recharge it but apparently there's a hefty fine if they fill it more than once knowing there is a leak (and get caught doing it).

Maybe go sit in the car for 15 minutes at a time with the AC running? :)

I just went and bought a hundred bucks' worth of pellets for my pellet stove yesterday. We're still lighting a fire every night here in the cold, soggy Pacific Northwest. Just now as I picked up the Sunday paper from the driveway I checked the thermometer on the garage - it's currently 46° and drizzling. But there is a chance it might break 60 this afternoon.

I saw a few those , well, actually quite a few of those hangin' out at the pool today at work. Lucious things! Oh man. Christ it had to  have been pushing 100 today in SoCal. Viciously hot... presently tippin' back a cold one and thinking back on the lovely sights of the day.

    It's perfect here today.

24 degrees (ok, 76 for you pond guys), the gentlest of breezes and a perfectly blue sky.

Tomorrow and for the rest of the week, heavy rain is forecast

    Here's few ideas....

Visit the mall and watch the people. It's air conditioned and entertaining so get a good seat, something cool to drink and relax.

Back at home.... the key word here is WINDOW AIR CONDITIONER..... it might only cool one or two rooms but hey...I lived with a window AC for years, and a few fans.

I ended up getting a small "roll around" air conditioner that vents with a "dryer vent like hose" out a window.  Works...mmm...OK.  We put it in the living room during the afternoon and our bedroom at night.  We start taking bids tomorrow for a new system.  I'm sure that will be hell  fun.  We'll survive but I loves me some air conditioning and miss it plenty.  Does remind me of my childhood here in the South with just a small oscillating fan by my bed and the attic fan running all through the night.  But the nostalgia doesn't outweigh the heat index;-)

I'm glad you were able to get something to stay reasonably cool.  This is one situation where nostalgia loses every time.

In my home over in the Philippines our power is very unreliable and often the voltage drops too low to run the A/C. When that happens, I fall back to the poor man's air conditioner: a bucket of water over the head and sit in front of a fan with an iced beverage.

Not recommended for in the studio, however.
