Record dry and monitor with effects

Hello guys!

Thinking about buying my first analog mixer. The candidates are: Behringer X2442USB or X1832USB. I'm reading the manual right now but I'm a bit confused.

My question is: is it possible to record dry and monitor with the built in effects??

How should I conect everything / which "buttons" and knobs should I press??

Thanks.

first, I would not advise getting a behringer USB mixer, or at leas if you get a behringer usb mixer, don't use the USB part.  you didn't mention if you already have a recording soundcard or not, but if you don't, I would advise not using the behringer USB mixer as your soundcard - get a better recording soundcard instead.  the behringer USB is actually just a 16bit 2 channel soundcard and it's not much better than your computers' onboard soundcard.  you can only record the MAIN OUTS of the mixer with it, not individual input channels.  there are mixers which will do that, but not the behringers - usually not the USB ones, although there might be a few.  usually multi-channel mixers are firewire.

check my website for recommendations on soundcards.

now to answer your question directly - are you asking about "built in FX" of the mixer or "built in FX" of sonar?  and which version of sonar do you have?

as far as how to connect everything - check my website.  I have tutorials on how to connect a mixer to your soundcard.

I agree with Beagle. I'm not very familiar with the mixers BUT...I recommend that you should consider doing it ALL "in the box"... use the software for everything.

If you really NEED to have some sort of mixer device setting on the desktop, I would recommend that you purchase a "Control Surface" that lets you control the recording functions and other stuff with a button press.

In my studio I have no external mixer. It's all in the box for me.

    Hi Beagle and Guitarhacker!

    Thanks for the replies.

Yes! I do have a sound card! I've just bought a Babyface. Very happy with it!

My intention is to buy a mixer for live gigs / rehearsals. And as long it's usb... I thought of taking a notebook and record the performace... just to register and listen afterwards. But I have to monitor with the built-in effects (from the mixer) during the gig / rehearsal.

    I'm using sonar x1.

Do you recomend save some money and buy a preamp like Focusrite Octopre MKII and do everything inside sonar?? What about latency?? It's low with the Babyface, but it's still there.

    Beagle,

Very cool your site!!! But I didn't find anything explaing how to setup a mixer....
    Thanks again.
