Does it work now? Or not?
Been away from X1 several months, I am a very happy XXXXXX X user right now (I x´ed it out so no one can say I am doing any advertising here) Out of interest, last time I had it installed X1a was pretty unusuable for me, so what is the overall experience now? What is the latest version, are we already at X1f or what?

Sonar doesn't work in a Lear jet because they're not insulated enough. Boeing's are OK, though.

Sonar X1Cj works good for me. I thought i was having an issue with it the other day because Sonar was unresponsive, but it was due to a failing hard drive that i corrected and it stopped being unresponsive... Cj

I am running X1b on a fresh install of Win7 64 and it's running very solid for me. Even faster now with 3 SSD's. Makes a world of difference.

Works for me, but mileage seems to vary. I'm generally happy with the workflow and stability. There are certainly still some issues but they don't affect how I make music for the most part, so I'm comfortable with it but sympathetic to those who aren't so much. Since we don't know how you like to work or how stable and solid it will be on your system, there's really only one way to know if you'll be in the comfy camp or not...

Bristol_Jonesey Perfectly stable here also - on NEW projects. I'm still running under WinXP 32 bit. My experience is exactly the same. I had totally given up on X1 until I read something that prompted me to try only new projects created in X1 from templates created in X1 (not templates created in previous versions). It's still not flawless, but definitely usable now (for me).

That's a good point. I went through a helluva process on an album project where most of it was created in 8.5 x86. I went all the way to X1 x64. OK, it was much work but then again, I managed to make it all sound better and more interesting so in that respect it wasn't a bad thing;) But it wasn't like with previous upgrades where it was as simple as opening previous projects. the only thing that really bugs me now is the lack of 64 bit support for ReWire

> the only thing that really bugs me now is the lack of 64 bit support for ReWire It's kind of nuts that isn't it? What the hell are propellorheads playing at? I like Reason a lot, but it's gone from being something I used all the time, to being something I pretty much don't use at all. That can't be just me.

Same here. In all my projects with Reason I just bounced out what I needed, threw the audio into Sonar and haven't touched reason since. And I won't upgrade it until ReWire is 64-bit. "It's kind of nuts that isn't it? What the hell are propellorheads playing at?" Yeah, talk about falling behind!

Does it work now? Or not? Yes every version has worked for me. Yeah there was the temporary AudioSnap set back, but X1 as a DAW worked for me from day one (even on an underspec'd laptop).

I used to be a big fan of propellerheads but they have really disappointed me with their handling of rewire and have therefore lost a customer who has been using their products since reason 1 and every upgrade. The only program of theirs I still use is recycle and if there was an alternative I would use that.....

props have done their loyal customers no favours , glad I'm not the only one who thinks that.. I own a LOT of their products... but I spend more of my money elsewhere these days. favourism to apple / logic customers for a start stands out.. rex-64 finally in.. VERY over due rewire 64... who knows maybe this year ?!? recycle... would be great if it was updated e.g batch mode.. only use it now to generate Rex/rx2 files.. and as for their suggestions bit.. looks like they don't even read it. other things like by other companies geist / guru etc do the same thing.. kontakt is good at beat slicing.

Still waiting for the damn Quicktime x64 component but that is neither Cakewalk nor Steiny´s fault. (film music specific, so no one else will give a damn about it) Excuse me but downward compatibility is a must have, how can this not work with Sonar X1?? I´ve recently been adapting and re-arranging old compositions I did in Cubase SX3 now in Surround and using new instrument libraries for a broadway show, now in Nuendo 5 without a hick-up, so this should be standard. In comparison, I can still open up Word files from 95, so this should be the same with audio sequencers right? Greetz, JNH

Well that's a nifty little question "Does it work now or not". If you don't mind the Pro Channel turning on and off by itself, snap to grid changing on it's own, no toolbar customization, slim to no color choices, then you'll be just fine. For now I went back to 8.5.3, but I'm hoping X1C brings some much needed changes. It looks promising. If you are concerned, I'd wait a few weeks and see what X1C brings. It's due to be released early August.

I use some soft synths but for the most part our material is audio and VST plug-in (effects). I do currently have an issue that causes Sonar X1 to crash when I attempt to open IK Multimedia ARC 1.3.1 64-bit. I've submitted an issue with them and waiting to hear back. Beyond that, we've had no major issues (other than the learning curve of the new workflow). From what you've described though, it sounds like you will use Sonar X1 differently (more VSTi based) that our typical projects are. So, I'm with Fog, you really should get the latest updates from Cakewalk and try it on a test machine to see how it is working in your environment. As for comparing Word95 files to DAW compatiblity, that most likely won't be true as it really depends not just on the DAW itself, but that all of your third party instruments and plugins play fair. I've opened older projects within Sonar and I don't tend to find any issue with the instruments/plugs that Sonar provides. It seems like I get issues with third party plugins. Most of the time I can just remove those old plugs and add the new version of them back into the project. Tom

Here's a true story that might shed some light on why something works for some and not others. There was a famous writer/producer who used to rent out a particular studio to do some of his writing and pre-production work. It had an 88 note keyboard controller he really liked at the time. Over the years many people rented out the same studio room and used the controller quite successfully. But one day this writer/producer stopped renting the room. The studio owner asked him why he hadn't been coming lately. The writer/producer said "I don't like your keyboard anymore". The owner said "but everyone is in love with it -- you used to be -- what changed?" The writer/producer said "Yeah I know everyone loves it now. But the highest note is stuck/broken and I use it as a key-switch on almost all my tracks. No one else uses that note I guess so they don't think there's something wrong. But I can't use it anymore." The morale of the story ... should be obvious

I work almost exclusively with VSTi's and most of them are from "known" vendors such as NI, Spectrasonics, Modartt, Soundtoys, Arturia, Camel. I am very stable in 8.5.3 but unable to work at all in X1 due to continuous crashes (old and new projects). I'm not willing to recreate a new template for every sub-revision of the product, as it doesn't help me a bit with any of my legacy projects, which crash quite reliably in X1, but continue to open fine in 8.5.3. New projects with even a stripped-down X1 template still blow up on launch, save, etc. I don't have time to systematically remove plugins from my projects to see what might be causing the issues. I worked a number of calls with Cakewalk tech support that had me trying more and more radical approaches to get it working. I gave up and went back to 8.5.3 after a complete uninstall and clean reinstall of X1 and patches failed to make any difference. Same machine works a champ in 8.5.3, utterly unusable in X1B+patches. YMMV

no. very flakey with films, has corrupted its own projects, forgets its own settings (prochannel for example), forgets its own bussing in saved projects etc. so i use it now for short midi things, but anything with a client and a schedule i use other software.
