Re:Hey Spacey, do you know anything about Cedar? 2011/07/04 01:14:58 (permalink)
I'm not Spacey, but I have some thoughts.
Cedar is not a particularly strong wood. It is quite soft, and easily dented. It is mostly used in furniture for its aromatic qualities. For a substantial piece, such as an armoire, I would be inclined to use a hardwood for the structural shell, and line it with cedar.
Don't seal the cedar. An occasional sanding will reveal fresh wood, and renew the aromatics.

I'm not Spacey either and I’m far from an expert but I do a little woodwork … cedar is low density so it may nick and scratch. Also, from what I have heard, some people have allergic reactions around cedar.

Furniture made from cedar or pine tends to look rustic so, folks often make indoor furniture from pine and outdoor furniture from cedar (for its insect and rot resistance).

I have a small cedar in my backyard and cut a nice straight branch from it to make a walking stick … and found that is was very easy to whittle.

Good choice. One of the reasons cedar has always been used for hope chests and clothes storage and such, is it deters bugs... they don't like it. I was always told that anyway as I grew up in the Northeast US and was pretty much forced into logging at young age when I should've been allowed to watch Saturday morning cartoons... but that's another therapy session.

As we await Spacey's take on the issue, I'll second Dave's comments on the softness of cedar.  Joint construction may prove a bit of a challenge (been there, done that), and one possible approach is the use of knock down style connectors that would have the advantage of relatively solid connections.  These are now available in some fairly decorative styles.

BTW- Love the new avatar, Mike.  If you and Bapu are doing "Charlie Wilson's War" on movie night, you can order an extra tub of popcorn and count me in.  That and "Wag the Dog" are two of my all time favorites.
