Oh deer ...

So the wife goes to the grocery store this afternoon. About 15 minutes after she leaves I get a call ... a deer jumped out of the ditch and right on to the hood of the car. Smashed the hood in down to the engine. Amazingly the deer jumped up and ran off so unless he had internal injuries he's still out there terrorizing other unsuspecting motorist. The wife is fine, air bags didn't even go off.

Oh ... 32 ~ 33 days ago, her dad talked her in to lowering the deductible on our cars to save money. I was against it because as you all know, I have really bad luck, plus I really don't like anyone telling my wife what to do with our money (it's an ego thing if you know what I mean).

Not even 5 days in to the month that the $1,000 deductible kicks in she hits a friggin deer. The first deer she's ever hit in the 20 years she's been driving. Unbelievable. And I just got done telling her (3 times actually) to be on the lookout because I almost hit 3 deer myself. It's been so rainy and cool here this summer that the grass in the ditches is up higher than the roads and the deer have been traveling in them for cover and they have been all over the place this past month.

Now I feel bad for spending all that cash on my new mic and preamp. I knew I should have just banked it. :( Damn it. Oh well, it's only money. I guess it could have been worse, but honestly ... 3 days after the friggin $1000 deductible kicks in ... you can't make this crap up.

    Hi Bub,

I guy a used to work with back in NJ had a 77-78 vintage Thunderbird--back when they were huge and didn't have any real connection to the original car except for the name.  The deer landed square on the hood of the car and it's upper torso--if that's what you call it on a deer--went through the windshield.  Fortunately, the driver wasn't seriously injured.

I'm glad your wife wasn't injured.  Everything else can be fixed or replaced.

Good luck with all of that,
    Jan

Wow Bub, that really is a kick in the nuts for you buddy.

I'm glad your good lady is OK, sounds like those deer can do a lot of damage.

Maybe you should ask your father-in-law for a thousand bucks worth of further 'advice'.

And don't feel guilty about your recent purchases mate, you're only feeling that way with the benefit of hindsight.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, Bub.

I see two great pieces of advice above:
    1. Ask your father in law for the differential (Strummy).
    2. Write a song about it. (Mike)

The best way to accomplish #1 is to have the wife call her dad and guilt him..."Great advice, dad, now it's going to cost us an extra $______, because we listened to you."  It works on me.

I have a friend who had a wild turkey come through his windshield right into his chest and head... he didn't know what had happened... thankfully most of the blood and all the guts were from the turkey... it is funny now but he thought he was dead when it happened.

+1 with the caveat that the song you write becomes very popular and covered by Katy Perry or Lady Gaga.  That way it will get played so much that your father in law will be sick of it and sorry that he made the suggestion.  You should put a verse in there for that purpose.

There's some excellent advice in this thread. :) My wife did call her parents and I heard something to the effect of "Thanks for the advice Dad!" and there was some laughing. :)

He's the kind of guy who'll probably send a check for a grand ... then I'll be even more upset. HEHE

I'll start working on the song right away. :)

They've been everywhere here lately. The heard in Iowa is getting out of control. They extended the season and tags last year. The lil' babies are cute though, they still have their spots right now.

On my drive home from work I have to be especially vigilant along 'deer alley', Hwy 42 east of Clayton. My brother Mike's car was killed by a deer a few years ago on that road and my Miata is smaller than that car, so I know they could easily destroy it.
Since I mostly work 2nd shift, I see lots of them along that route and a few weeks ago I saw a deer standing in the road, in the oncoming lane, facing the other way.
I slowed, and when it heard me, did it run the few feet to the left side of the road? Of course not; it turned and ran right in front of me. Missed it by inches.
And was almost rear-ended by a speeding, tailgating SUV.

Well there went Venison for dinner. Glad she wasn't hurt Bub. I hit one in Colorado a few years back. $1500 later my truck was fixed.

Though sorry to hear of your financial woes, Bub, I'm glad she's ok.  That could have ended very badly.

Up in these parts, deer season is viewed by some as pest control (usually the farmers and related industry) - we've had so many mild winters in the portions of ND where the deer herd hang out, and DNR (or whatever they're called) are trying to keep the herd thinned, but are barely holding the line.
