Not with any real accuracy.  All you can really do is transcribe the pitches, estimate the velocities tempo changes and other CC messages, and input your best guesses afterwards. There are probably some apps that promise this functionality out there, but I don't know of any that have proven successful.  Unless I'm wrong.

Plugs like v-vocal indicate converting audio to midi.

I've not used it for this to know its products.

Google "audio to midi".  There are some programs out there that attempt this.  I tried one for a violin solo with disappointing results.  A polyphonic or multitimbral file would be worse.

There are people working on these.  I don't think today is the day.

I'll be watching this to see if I'm wrong.

Have you guys used Melodyne in this capacity?  If so, are the results good?  I keep "almost" buying melodyne, but if audio to midi is decent, i'll place my order today!

The holy grail? I doubt even Melodyne can pull this off with the effectiveness we all crave. The day is coming though and it will be a sweet day indeed when it arrives.

    Hi jinga-

It depends on the source material, of course, but if you want to post a short clip I'll run it through Melodyne so you can see the results.

    Audioscore Ultimate is another one.
The basic Audioscore comes with Sibelius, the 'Ultimate' is an upgrade.

You can get pretty decent results with FL Studio, too (monophonic only, though).

Why not download the demo version of Melodyne? It is fully functional for 30 days, so time enough to see if it fits your needs. If it does you can always buy it, and if not you don't lose any money..

Indeed - V-vocal seems to have this possibility. I never seriously tried that, so I cannot comment on the usability. One thing is for sure. Make sure the audio source you are using is as "clean" as you can get. Minimising background noises (like instruments, voices or just random noise) increases success rate.

Hmm.. Sounds interesting now I spend some toughs about it.
I have a bit quiet day today, so... Time to play around a bit?

I've played around with the tools provided in Sonar but to honest, the time I spent messing around trying to get it to work, I could have entered the data using a keyboard or mouse faster.

I looked into this a while back as well.  Specifically I was looking for something to take the audio drums parts and convert them to midi.  I was able at that time to purchase DrumTracker from ToonTrack and it worked (with a bit of effort).

For vocal audio, I'm with Jumbicat.  I'd say grab the midi keyboard and play it.  That would be a lot quicker in the long run.

Hi Sykodelic:     i use sonar x1 essential mainly with the synthetic instruments using the score to program the notes. i carry around a digital recorder for when a tune comes to me. i then translate the notes into sonar using the score. it would be a lot easier if i could sing my creation directly into the score so i can switch it into a sythn. i know this was not a popular focus for sonar but i thought it might be possible. thanx for your interest.

Power Tracks Pro Audio from PG Music has Pitch to MIDI conversion.  I've never tried it, so I don't know if it does a good job or not.

Back when I did all my audio recording on a Roland VS880, I used Power Tracks for MIDI.  Now that I'm using Sonar, I don't record with it anymore, but I keep it around because it contains some nice extras like TC Helicon Harmony, Audio Chord Wizard and RealDrums.  I've had some really good results with RealDrums, even on a piece in 5/4.

I don't think you can download a demo, but the program itself only costs $49, which is pretty cheap even if you only get it for the extras.

I reverted back to sonar becuase of this function in V-vocal, really quite simple, make v-vocal clip then bottom left corner drag midi to track, great for ripping stuff and for converting audio clips, dont get me wrong its will only give you Polyphonic so if you are ripping a full track section you have to do a lot of guess work to delete unwanted instrument parts to find the section you want but i have come up with some great results, if its only a monophonic sample then great it works a treat, the only inconsistancy is sometime the data is a bit off time and i either quantise or manually shift the data also baring in mind if the audio is proscessed with effects and delays etc, the timing will be off, but all the same i love this function in v-vocal.
another Vst is http://vielklang.zplane.de/ similar Process, but way more options to seperate parts, A lot better than v-vocal. Best check out the demo first though as it is Primarily for expanding vocals to make harmonys etc.
