Mixer/Soundcard Set Up
I used to run this program on a desktop with a 2496 sound card. Ran a mixer into it, never had an issue. Now, running on a laptop with a USB interface. Nothing but issues. It cannot get more basic. Setup: Behringer 1204FX mixer: Using a Lexicon Alpha. Has 2 1/4" inputs, one XLR input, 2 1/4" outs and an RCA out. I currently have the 2 1/4" outs going to the inputs, 1 and 2. I am getting a wild, insane digital noise. If anyone saw that movies signs, where the kid is using a baby monitor to pick up alien ships communicating, that is the type of sound, only higher pitch. Anyway, what is the best set up here? Am I doing it right, but have other issues? Oh, I am using Sonar Home Studio 6. Running on Windows 7, but in compatability mode, as per Cakewalk customer support. Thanks, as usual. I am really flustered. I never had these issues, and I am no where near proficient at all. I have never even used the Soft Synths! It has all been acoustic guitars, keys and what have you. I am ready to work this program, and now can't get it to work. Driving me crazy. Thanks for your help. Mike

are you maybe getting a feedback loop? are you sending the output from the mixer back into the alpha? how is it connected? what are the settings you have on the mixer? check my website for a tutorial on hooking up a mixer. it should apply to USB soundcards just as easily as PCI. go to RECORDING HELP then click on CAKEWALK HELP or whatever it was I called it. you'll have to scroll thru the FAQ pages until you find the mixer tutorial. it's about page 5 I think.

Eastmeadow Mike Using a Lexicon Alpha. Has 2 1/4" inputs, one XLR input, 2 1/4" outs and an RCA out. I currently have the 2 1/4" outs going to the inputs, 1 and 2. By this, do you mean the 1/4" Line Outputs of the Alpha are connected to Line In 1&2 of the Alpha? How, exactly, do you have the mixer connected to the Alpha? I have been looking at the manuals for the Alpha and the 1204FX, and it looks like you have a few opportunities for a feedback loop, as Beagle suggested. Do you have your monitors connected directly to the Alpha Outputs, or are you routing the signal back to the mixer? Is the Monitor Mix knob set to Playback? Are you using the USB 2.7 drivers dated 6/07/2011? In SHS6: Are both Recording and Playback Timing masters set to the Alpha? Which driver mode is selected? What options do you have selected in the Drivers tab? That's all I can think of at the moment, but please answer these questions. Edited to modify questions.

I am about to beat myself to death with an SM58. It's like I never owned this program. I am completely baffled. I get no audio signal at all in the track. Got the sound OK now between the interface and the mixer. However, nothing in the program when it is armed. No signal. Nothing. Zero. I think I have the settings proper. Should I be using MME or ASIO? I always used ASIO with the 2496. Seriously, I never has any issues at all. I figured things out...went along slowly, asked for help here and elsewhere, and was about to record audio tracks. I have never delved into the MIDI, and if and when I figure this out I will be annoying you all for some assistance. But for now...What is going on here??? Sorry for the elementary issue. Thanks very much. Mike

Use Asio for sure, Just to rule out any problems in Sonar you could try downloading Audacity and see if you get audio in that, or even if you have something like windows sound recorder, anything that can record audio. Just to make sure I understand your setup you are running a mic into the behringer mixer then into the Alpha. Is there a software mixer for the alpha or any other way to tell if the audio is actually getting to the computer? This "basic" stuff is more complicated than most people think unfortunately audio equipment is not exactly plug and play.

This is what I would do.. connect the Alt 3-4 outputs to 2-1/4" inputs of the Alpha. Put all of the inputs on the Mixer into Alt 3-4 mode so they feed the computer. Then, put the output of the Alpha into the stereo aux return and assign that return to the main mix. Doing it that way eliminates the feedback loop possibilities. You will monitor via the phones/ctrl room output of the main mix, which is the output of your computer. Your other issue.. make sure you have all the drivers selected in the options, audio section. Like mxz said.. use Asio.

Thanks guys. So, I do have the mixer routed to 3 & 4, and yes, sent to 1 & 2 on the Alpha. I get a wild, high pitch noise in Line 2. Unreal. As far as routing back, I will send the Outs from Alpha to the Aux return. Will give all that a shot later. Will report back, sad to say. Hopefully it is good news. Thanks again everyone. Mike
