MIDI guys- Is there a faster way to do this?
So you create 16 midi tracks... Is there a fast way to grab all of them and set the softsynth inputs: midi track 1 channel 1, midi track 2 channel 2, midi track 3 channel 3... etc? Is there a better way than manually clicking every track's submenu?

Yes It's called saving a template. ...

Like Cactus Music suggests, a Template is the best place to start. There is already a 16 channel Midi Template with channels assigned. I loaded that template and saved it as a MIDI format 1 file. If I want to insert 16 tracks already channel assigned, I just import that Midi file into an existing project. First I create one Midi track and assign the output channel to 1. Then I select that track and import the Midi file. This leaves me with 16 empty Midi tracks assigned to channels 1-16, in addition to everything else that was already there. It's not a very elegant solution but it's easier than having to manually change the channel of 16 Midi tracks. I created a Template that is a track folder containing 16 midi channels and four stereo outputs of the Cakewalk TTS-1, and a Master bus. For me, that's a good place to start.

Also consider saving as a Track Template rather than a Project Template. A Track Template is a saved configuration of tracks, routing, softsynths and effects. It has the advantage that it can be added to a project at any stage, not just at the start.

I think you can do that in alt/track/properties.

I'm not at my DAW to try to figure it out. is that what Timidi is answering? I've never used Track Templates before but on Kev999's suggestion I checked it out. It does seem like the best way to do what the OP wants. I couldn't do anything with alt/track/properties so maybe I'm doing it wrong. I took my 16 Midi tracks, inserted the TTS-1 soft synth, output all the Midi tracks to the TTS-1. Then I selected those 17 tracks and exported them as a Track Template named TTS-1 16 Track Midi. I then deleted all the tracks and the TTS-1 from the synth rack. Then I clicked the Insert new track(s) or bus(es) button to import the new template. Not only did it import the tracks but also put the TTS-1 back in the synth rack. So inserting 16 channel assigned Midi tracks this way seems a good option. Thanks for the heads up on Track Templates, Kev999. I will definitely be using those in the future.

I was referring to the OP's query Beagle. But, re-reading his post I see he wanted the midi tracks/channels to be sequencial. probably can't do that with alt/track/properties. I never thunk of using track templates with multiple tracks. Kind of like a song template but available 'after the fact'.. Cool.

Make 16 empty midi tracks manually assign the channels 1-16. Save as track template - name blank midi tracks with channels - or whatever ultra creative name you want. It's a breeze to insert track templates into projects as Chappel shows above. You will just have to highlight them and point them to the soft synth of your choosing

I think you DO have to set that up manually... but once you do, save it as a track template as others have said, but also when you save the song, you can recall THAT and cntl+A>delete, "save as" with a new name, and use that set-up for a new song. It's the lazy way I do it, anyway...

You don't have to manually assign the channels if you use the 16 Track Midi Template.

I'm not at mine either, but I just looked it up in the manual. To save a track template: MENU: File > Export > Track Template To load a track template: MENU: Insert > Insert From Track Template OR Right-click in the Tracks pane and select Insert From Track Template. By the way, sometimes they take an age to load. Be patient.

Yeah, track templates and folders are great !. I use them all the time, typically I set up a soft synth in a track folder with all the patches/instruments/channels I might commonly use, select the folder and save it as a track template. Works a treat and saves a ton of time. Cheers - Cliff

Thanks guys! I ran into this while building an orchestra template. Never thought of using track templates that way. In Pro Tools there is a modifier to hold, so if you select 16 tracks and set the first input, the rest of the inputs can be set chronologically-- pretty handy, but track templates get it done too. Thanks again!
