I think Bob Dylan should re-release his old masters and with the lead vocal run through Auto-Tune.

I'll put my faith in Darwin. We'll all eventually sing in tune when the organic autotune implant becomes available. Over the coming generations, this will be built in, making us all amazing opera singers. Singing out of tune will take the biggest stages. My cat meoews out of tune, but animals won't receive the original implant, thus leaving them the only creatures worth listening to from the old world.

Lots of people who can't sing refuse to rely on gimmicks like Autotune to make a musical career. I mean, that's why there's hip hop, right? ;)
That's pop music these days. It's either autotuned, or then, it doesn't have a melody (or if there's one, it's borrowed/sampled from a hit single of the 70's/80's).

Paul Simon said something along those lines...punk was invented for people who can't play a musical instrument, rap for those who can't sing. I shudder to think what the next logical evolutionary step might be. Perhaps a genre that does not even require a sense of rhythm? Mm, wait, I think we have that already.

We might eventually get a break - maybe they'll cut right to the chase. After all, what lots of the younger folks seem to be after these days is fame/public notoriety and money. How often do we hear things like - I'd like to be a singer or an actress or a model. It's just a mean to achieve success. I'm a musician. I never asked myself if I wanted to be an actor or a model. It's just what I do. Saw that vid yesterday of a 16 years old who just married a 51 year old agent. Talent - none. Ethics - none. Brains - none. Personality - black hole. Autotune and implants - voilà. Let's make a video!! Generic song, and 3-2-1 Action! I say lets give them their 15 minutes of fame already so that we can get it over with. But like you Bit, I'm a bit worried when I consider what's the next step - the current crop of teens grew up w/ models like Paris Hilton and Britney. And now, the younger ones are growing up exposed to those Courtney Stoddens and Rebecca Blacks. They'll have to outdo THAT?! Man, it'll be complex raising a kid in that world.
