Best bang-for-buck motherboard for X1?

I'm thinking Asus or Gigabyte.  Something that will run i5 and i7, TI firewire, 12-32gb RAM. at least 2 PCI, USB 3 etc...

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't think you can go wrong with those two companies. I'm an ASUS man myself but Gigabyte is really good too. I think the firewire is getting a bit long in the tooth with the advent of USB 2 & 3 so you may want to buy while the high end boards still have it integrated.

That looks like a great board but it as the VIA firewire.  I want to stick with TI.  Do all the ASUS boards use VIA?

I also have the Asus P8P67 and yes, it has via firewire, but I just installed my PCI firewire with TI on it.

Anybody remember Abit? They used to be right there neck and neck with Asus. I was just wondering because I was going through some boxes yesterday and found a manual for an old BE7 478 board. I never did use that board and it sits somewhere brand new and still in the box.  What happened to them? Belly up? Bought out?

I'm replacing an Abit board.  They did go belly up.

neck and neck with asus is right... neck and neck with number of DOA or died later bad boards!

thus why they are belly up..
Asus is better at marketing.. and vastly larger thus why they are still around.

hehe... I've never had an Asus board die on me. Knock on wood(I'm thinking now I shouldn't have said that). All the ones I've built are still alive and kicking. I think the first one I built was in '98 or '99? That was my first experience building my own... and what a trip that was. I thought for sure it was gonna explode the second I plugged it in, haha.

I've worn out a few Asus boards.  They did last long enough so that I didn't feel cheated, but I eventually moved to Gigabyte.  No sour grapes, I think they just had a few features that I was looking for at the time.

I've also used Tyan and Supermicro.  They're good, too--but they're very expensive and hard to find.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

MSI was real popular for awhile too but have seemed to fall out of favor a bit over the years.

I've had both Asus and Gigabyte.  like old55 I keep them long enough not to feel cheated (Asus).

I've also had MSI, that was what I had for my last DAW and I did feel cheated with how long it took for it to die.  it's not completely dead but some things no longer work on it and I only had it for 2 years.

Just finished installing Asrock x58 Extreme3 and seems to be working fine. Use firewire Focusrite Saffire. Great price on Newegg awhile ago.

    I'm thinking Asus or Gigabyte.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either of those for a Sandybridge chip.

ASUS probably have the edge on user friendly setup and I'd probably plump for an Z68 chipset board if I was buying today.

I've never had a board crap out on me... yet. It's always a HD or PSU that goes to hell on my systems. I've still got several socket 478 machines that run without a hitch. I don't use them anymore, obviously, but they run. Still got a couple Yamaha cdrw burners too. One of 'em, the F1, had an audio quality master mode... burned at something like 1x. Had a lot of fun when I first started building. Lot of nerve racking moments too... I received a P4 CPU with a bent pin... instead of sending it back I took a small screw driver and gently prodded the pin upright... slapped it in and all was well. I got lucky with that particular surgery, hehe.

Anybody ever us this: Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H-B3?

I went for an H67 board and whilst it's a cheap option and will give you the ability to run the on chip graphics (meaning it is cheaper still, due to needing no discrete video card and a modest rated power supply)  I can only run the 2600k just shy of 4Ghz, and while that means it's no slouch today I can see me wanting a mid-life board upgrade at some point.

That's why I'm suggesting a z68 board if you can run to it as you have the advantages of running the on chip graphics (which the 3000 series ain't that bad) as you have on the H67 boards as well as the ability to OC the CPU as you have on the P67 boards.

Again it is horses for courses I had to come in at a sub £500 price tag on my new machine which dictated some of the choice I had.
