Help with fret buzz problem please.

Hi hope some of the guitar Gurus on here could please help answer this for me

I have a Martin oocx1ae I gave it to a guy I know to use today and before I gave it to him it was playing fantastic !

I got it back and it has really bad fret buzz on the D string
Could any one please tell me why this would randomly just happen in the space of a day ?

I did some google searches but It was saying that the neck may be twisted .... Is that possible and how would I check ? If it was the neck would it not cause every string to buzz ?

I hope some one can please help give me a few Ideas on what to check

It has new strings Martin 10s that I always use on it

Before I handed it over it was great s I dont have a clue whats happened.

Is there anything he could have done that could have caused this ?

I will take it to a tec as soon as I can but funds are a bit tight this week and I would like to have a Idea of whats wrong before I take it to a tec.

Thanks to everyone who may have an idea of what I can check

Have you replaced strings since you got it back?

It may just be a string that's about to break.

    Hi Mike

It was fresh strings that were put on just a day ago

I am just about to change the string though and see if this sorts the problem

Ive never come across this with this guitar before though so its a new one on me

    Hi Norrie,

Use both hands and fret the 1st and 14th fret of the D string and look to see if a fret popped up and is hitting the string somewhere.

If it was taken from an air conditioned house, outside in the humidity, left in a car, then taken back inside, the neck may need to be adjusted.

To adjust the neck, Fret the 1st and 14th fret on the Low E string and make sure there is a small gap between the string and the neck around the 7th fret, approximately the thickness of a business card. If there is no gap or too little gap you can get some fret buzz. To increase the gap loosen the neck adjusting rod a 1/4 turn at a time. This will loosen the tension on the neck and allow it to bow a little which is what you want. You don't want a perfectly straight flat neck.

I would start with checking those two things.

There's a bunch of video's on Youtube that show you step by step how to do this.

You don't have to adjust the neck of the guitar. Just adjust the "String Height screw" on the bridge of your guitar until it stops the buzz. I have that problem when I baught my guitar and I just adjested those screws. My screws were hexagon shaped ones and my guitar came with the tools to adjust it. Though I'm not sure all guitars have it.

I was thinking your friend isn't telling you the whole story.

Maybe he took it to the beach and between the salt air and humidity, and leaving it lay on the sand in the sun.... not to mention the beer that was spilled on it and the vollyball that smacked into it or the little kid that first tried to use it as a shovel and then decided it worked better as a boat in his sand castle moat.... and that it was dropped several times since the guy carrying it was inebriated and had his hands too full......

    OR... maybe not....

Like I said, I'm not sure if all guitars have it. I currently own a electric guitar and used to own an acoustic one and wasn't so sure about it.

Frets near f/b extension may need leveling. You can also adjust the truss rod until the buzz dissapears. Here is a video to help you out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-HxuBDiAcg

The guy in that video has no clue and should never be allowed near a guitar again with tools. LOL! You never adjust a neck without stings like he shows. Loosen them to get the plate off then retune it, but never take them off to adjust the neck.

Here ... this guy knows what he's doing. The truss rod adjustment starts at 2:25.

    Before adjusting anything:

    Where is it buzzing?

Open string - likely the nut, the bridge, the string itself, maybe the tuner, but not the neck

Below a particular fret, but not above it - high or badly seated fret

~3rd-7th fret when plucked hard - too little neck relief, but this would almost certainly affect other strings as well

Only one note - something somewhere is loose and resonating at that frequency

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Hi Guys thanks for all the reply's

So I had a proper check of the guitar and its the top 3 strings first 5 frets causing a lot of fret buzz.

I have no Idea what he did to it I think Guitar hacker might be right :P

I took it to my friend who is a luthier he checked it out and its the trust rod and told me its most likely been caused by Humidity

Thanks for all of the reply's Ive never had this problem with this guitar and its been on very hot stages and studios etc so I have no Idea were hes had it to bring it back like that

    I guess I will never know .....

    Thanks again to all
