SOLVED: MIDI setup Kurzweil 2600 issue
Ok, I'm a bit new to MIDI controllers, but I have my Kurzweil K2600 connected to my audio interface (Tascam US1800) from the MIDI out on the K2600 to the MIDI in on the Tascam. In X1 Producer preferences, I have selected the TASCAM MIDI device under MIDI > Devices In all noob seriousness, if I insert a softsynth for say z3ta+ as a simple instrument track, I should be able to select Omni for the Input and either a Bus or the Tascam as an output and get something when I press keys on the K2600. But I get nothing. I feel like I'm missing a step or theres a much more in-depth process to setting up the K2600 for this. In the K2600 under the MIDI, I have set transmit to Channel 1 (I think). MIDI experts, throttle me!

Firs tcheck to see if windows see's the MIDI ins and outs. When you press a key on the midi controller, do you see the window's midi icon blink? Also, when you insert a soft synth using the insert synth function, you do not have to change any inputs or outputs to get sound. Sonar sets it all up for you. So maybe you are changing something you shouldnt be

The Tascam US1800 is my audio interface through Windows, I don't have a MIDI icon, per se. The MIDI cable goes from the K2600 to the Tascam. And then USB from the Tascam to the PC. I did a simple insert and changed nothing and I don't get any activity or sound at all.

☄ Helpful
there are obvious things to check with synths.. "local mode" is one thing.. as mentioned already, make sure your getting the blinking icon (where your clock is in the right corner). it'll show midi activity regardless of sound or not. in your audio, you have ONLY the tascam ticked ? if not do that for both the input / output.. then do the ASIO .. and apply your looking in advanced settings for the setting also ? and the usual in > out ... out > in thing with midi.

Sorry, I noobed the MIDI Icon, and see activity in the icon on the system tray. I have MIDI Input and Output devices set to the Tascam US1800, I checked all Advanced Audio settings.

Not sure what happened, but I re-inserted the soft synth, after starting over, and it seems to work now. I did notice that the MIDI OUT on the TASCAM (to the K2600) seemed a bit loose. All is well, the help is very much appreciated, thanks guys!

Addendum: I had the same problem after shutting down for the night and restarting, it seems (and this may be because of the K2600) there needs to be an order of operations as far as powering up. It doesn't seem to like it when the K2600 is powered up before I open X1, kind of odd, but I'm going to experiment. Anyhow, thanks again, I'll be sure to check my air gaps!

does seem odd that's the order of things.. maybe also how the tascam is dealing with things also. is there a kurzweil user group on yahoo etc? I know someone here uses one, but a different midi interface. maybe the drivers tascam put out , only start the midi side when called on i.e. music program started.. is there any task bar icon etc which shows the status of the midi ? I use a mu128 midi module, but use a Cakewalk UM-3-G for midi with it. if you could borrow a usb unit midi interface off someone that'd narrow down if it was the tascam drivers at fault.

Quite possible, I've searched around for some groups, finding Kurzweil 2600 support is tough. I'm leaning more towards how the Tascam is handling MIDI, it shows activity on the system tray icon but Sonar won't pick it up. Matter of fact, the level meters all show response, but no sound till I closed the project and started the order of operations.
