Re-write of an old tune

This is a rewrite of an old song.  This was a song that was inspired by a song that the late Jimmy Gentry wrote.  I had let it set for some time and after his recent passing, I had a new listen to it, and with the help of my co-writer Pat, we tackled some of the parts of the first version that were bugging me. Pat and I worked our tails off on this rewrite.

That Ought to count for something

Not much was done to the mix of the instruments, mainly this version has new lyrics in a few places. I think I used a different O4 on the master, but that's all musically.

On the original song Jimmy wrote, I asked him if I could rewrite it with him. After a few days he replied he wanted to leave his song "like it was", but told me to use what I wanted from his song... just not the title. When I contacted Pat, I sent her Jimmy's song, then asked if she wanted to write with me.... the rules were..... listen to the song.... I wanted to keep the FEEL of the song, but we would not use the title, the melody, or any of the lyrics in Jimmy's song.  Basically we would start from scratch writing the song. This is the song that resulted from that write...version two. Version one was recorded last year.

    Do not remember the original.

Sounds fine here Herb, thanks for sharing.

Yeah...I have that same memory problem too.....   old age is what I blame it on.

Thanks for listening.... as I said the music is pretty much the same, no new tracks or anything, just a new mastering plug setting and newer words in a few places.

    Thank you Robby...

I sing this while holding my Rode NT2A in my hand (real close) with no pop filter. Ozone 4 in the master tweezed, and exported to Wavepad where I normalize it and edit the start/ending.

Probably breaking all the rules in the process.

Herb, that's a really pretty song you and Pat put together there.  Nice track too and a good clean mix to my ears.  Vocals sounded just perfect for this song.  Loved it.

Great lyrics, great singing and playing.  Nice song.  To be honest, when you sing 'that oughta count for something' I want to hear a different chord progression.  Not sure what the chords are, though, as I have no piano or guitar nearby to play it.

Fantastic song and arrangement Herb.  Unfortunately I had to listen on the laptop so I cant comment on the mix (sounds good through the tiny speakers).  I really dug the slide guitar lines, the whole thing was tastefully done.

Very nice sounding mix.  Nice use of the soundscape.  The guitar lead was very appropriate for the material.

My only question is do you think that the acoustic and piano being panned to the one side are competing with each other?  I'm just wondering if you moved the acoustic (or the piano not really sure) to the other side might give them a bit more detail.  Just a thought.

Again, sounds great.  Very well done.

    Thanks for sharing,

Thanks for the comments Dan & Tom.

I really didn't do any work on the music for this rewrite... it was a lyrical write to fix some flow issues lyrically.

I try to keep the instruments balanced and not fighting for space.... In country, at least to me, the lyrics are the thing that needs to shine.... the story must be told. The instruments are there but they are not the star....except in solo's.

    Hi Herb,

I love this kind of country song.

The only thing that stands out to me in the 'mastering' not the 'mix' is it sounds a little sharp to me.

My only suggestion might be to bring the high end down a scosche, but that's it. Really nice song.

Herb, this is really great! I agree with Bub though...sounds a bit sharp to me on this end. For example (hope you don't mind me saying this) the snare sounds similar to the hats in the beginning...listen close, they are nearly hitting at the same frequency especially when the hats open.

A few little vocal sibs...I'd definitely reduce the highs on the vocals a bit.

Other than those two things though, this is awesome! Loved the guitars, the song, the vocal lines...and the mix levels are all great! Just a few little high end tweaks (which you can probably fix via mastering) and leave this baby alone! Awesome song, thanks for sharing it brother!
