Trying to get a certain sound and having some trouble

I am a guitar player but I own an Alesis QuadraSynth.

I just got Sonar X1 Producer and have been going through each of the soft synths. I have some also have some free synths that I downloaded but I can''t find the sound I am looking for. I need some advice.

The sound I am looking for I actually had when I recorded on my first 4 track 25 years ago using a borrowed analog synth. It is a strings like sound (ie violin, viola, cello, etc...) but not too realistic sounding. It also glides from one note to the next. I can't think what that is called.

Do you think I could fairly easily create this by playing with the controls on one of my soft synths?
Should I go for some layering of multiple synths sounds?
Is there another soft synth (ie free) out there that is good at synthetic strings?

I realize I could probably get there with any of these options and I should just experiment but all this is new to me and a bit overwhelming. So I am looking for some advice on a direction.

Thanks

Gliding from one pitch to another is called Portamento. I suggest you check out the Pentagon 1 soft synth. It may not be the only resource you have that will do what you want, but it does sound like it will do the job.

I will check it out again. When it is all new and there are so many options, it is hard to know which direction to go. Do you find it fairly easy to dial in a sound you like? I mean, one that is different than the default patches?

    Thanks for the pointer!
