Anyone running Sonar X1 on a Laptop?

Is there anyone running Sonar X1 on a Laptop?

If so what is the Laptop?  Is it working well? Any recomendations?

I am looking for a Laptop with the following specs

1. Core i7 processor
2. 4 gigs of Ram
3. 7200 RPM hard drive
4. 1080p Full HD display
5. Firewire Port
6. USB3 port

I am finding it almost impossible to find a machine with those specs. Ok I can compromise on some of those specs. I dont need a 1080p display for recording but I do want to do some video work so I would really like to have it.

The other specs are for my recording. I have a firewire soundcard so if I drop the firewire port I would have to buy a USB soundcard. However as much as it pains I would consider this.

However I have to have the Processor the Ram and of course the 7200RPM hard drive. I want to have the USB3 in case USB3 soundcards do start to emerge next year. I know Thunderbolt might scupper that but I am not in the market for a Macbook Pro.

Basically I am looking for a decent spec Laptop to run Sonar XI Reason 5 and my other plugs such as Addictive Drums, Ozone 4 etc.

I dont particularly want to go down the ADK route. They are a little over my budget which is about 2000 US Dollars or about 1500 Euro but I hope I dont have to go that high. Basically 1000- 1500 Euro is ideal.

I would be most grateful for any advice as I am desperately searching for a Laptop but cant seem to find one that fits my requirements within budget.

Thanks Steve

Check out either HP or PC Audio Labs. They both should offer laptops with your desired specs. I've used an HP workstation laptop with exactly those specs and it ran SONAR flawlessly, more or less like a portable desktop.

Thanks Seth, BTW as a matter of feedback I am upgrading to X1C from Sonar PE 7. I was hesitant to upgrade but Sonar X1C has given me the confidence to take the plunge. Just need to get the new Laptop to run it now hence the question.

Ah, very cool! Feel free to post any links or whatever to laptops you're looking back. I haven't used every model out there, but the HP workstation ran very well. Nothing like being able to put an 8-thread system in your backpack.

Seth- I have just been looking at some HP workstations. Nice but very expensive. I forgot to mention in my original post that I wanted a 17 inch Laptop. However I have just been looking at this Sony Vaio Laptop which at 16.4 inches is still big enough. Its got all my specs such as Core i7, 7200 RPM, Full HD, Firewire and USB3 ports. I dont know if Sony Vaios make good DAWS though. I still their chipset is not recommended but I could get a USB soundcard if necessary if my firewire card plays up. Have a look a this and tell me what you think.

I will be looking at several Laptops and wont rush out and buy anything until I have looked at least half a dozen laptops in detail.

Sorry just noticed  a typo there. That should be

"I think their chipset is not recommended."

I just cant find any Laptops with Texas Instrument chipsets which are the all important chipsets for firewire use. I know Sony dont use them. I think they use a Via chipset but dont quote me on that but I know they dont use Texas Instruments Chipset in their Vaio range.

It will be easier finding the right spec notebook, minus the firewire.

Then add on the correct firewire card (matching the slot provided by the notebook), such as http://www.buyextras.com/syie13fiexti.html

Thanks Tomixornot- Thats an idea I might pursue. However of course I will need a Laptop with an expresscard slot.

Its even been suggested to me to forget about Firewire altogether.

However I am reluctant to go that at the moment. Your expresscard slot suggestion is definitely a potential solution.

we most certainly fit your budget.. (upper range)
also Scan in the UK sells our laptops

firewire interface leaves you very few choices
adding a TI based Express card to an off the shelf does not mean firewire will work (good luck with that)
there are no off the shelf laptops with TI firewire
most new sandybridge do not have firewire or express slot.

Scott- Thanks for your input. I know you are an expert in this area.

I am seriously coming around to the idea that maybe I should just forget about Firewire.

I only record one thing at a time and most of my songs would never exceed 30 - 40 tracks at the maximum. I do run external plug ins such as Addictive Drums. However I find most of my plugs dont give me any problems except Ozone 4 which works ninety per cent of the time but sometimes crashes if I change a preset during playback while playing back a whole mix.

I honestly dont know what to do. I was looking at Sony Vaios F series but ideally I would like a 17 inch screen. Also I dont know how well they perform as a DAW.

My experience has been Toshiba and my current Laptop is a Toshiba. It has served my needs very well.

However its only a dual core circa 2008 processor well what was called Dual core before i3 i5 and i7 came to be known on Laptops.

Then there are HP Laptops which seem good for media but I am hearing about a lot of overheating problems with them.

Basically I want an i7 processor. My Laptop should have at least 4 gigs of Ram. Of course the 7200 RPM hard drive. These specs are non negotiable. I also want a USB3 port and I would really like a 1080p display.

I really dont know if the custom made route is necessary for my requirements. It may be but it also may not be. Maybe a decent multi media Laptop is all I need.

I am still weighing up my options. Totally undecided at present.

if you go USB i hear the HP "beats" (gag me) Envy series work well and have fairly low DPC..
mind you this is forum hearsay NOT my testing it..

even with USB, Laptops are a crap shoot (firewire near impossible)
best to buy from where you can return if it has DPC issues

IIRC, Jim Roseberry has said that some of the i5 machines are actually faster or better for a DAW than the i7.
You will be lucky to find a good new laptop with both US 3.0 and firewire.

I am using an HP Pvilion dm4 1165-DX. It has good DPC latency and a 500G 7200 HD. The next mdel up had a 750G HD but it was 5200. I have not used it extensively or with a high track count but with the Octa-Capture it does OK. It has an odd diplay resolution but still is OK. It came with 4G of RAM but has only two slots so to go to 8Gof RAM I will have to go with two 4G cards instead of adding two more 2G, which I would prefer, at least RAM isn't as expensive as it used to be.

    HP Pavilion dm4 1165-dx (i5)-8G RAM

    MIDI keyboards...
    Control Pad
