First time user needs help with Maschine and Sonar X1 Essential

I purchased Sonar X1 essential yesterday and I am having problems with using Maschine as a VST plugin. When I open maschine as a soft synth, I do not hear anything and nothing is showing in the meters. I tried to  change the audio setting to ASIO, but that just crashes the program. Has anyone else encountered this issue and what is the fix?

    maschine and your audio are 2 separate things..

    so what's your sound card , and have you set that up properly before worring about maschine.

    also you ran the NI service centre + maschine on it's own if it's got stand alone mode BEFORE using it in sonar
