acoustic guitar stereotypes... where are they from?
It has happened again. I have been informed that Martins are dark, Taylors are bright, and Gibson are in between. It was also suggested that if I know which sound I prefer then I will now which brand I will like. Who makes this stuff up? Is it urban myth created on sales floors? Is it the result of fancy ad campaigns? I can imagine there's a way to even prove it's true... regardless of the reality of the situation as a whole. I'm heading in to town to buy some dark strings for my bright Martin. What do you think? best regards, mike

I think you should paint your Martin dark. Simples.

Shouldn't all acoustic guitars be recorded in stereo?

Is there a bright to dark continuum that these guitars slot into? Who was the marketing genius who thought this up?

Martins are dark, Taylors are bright, and Gibson are in between When Philz and I went to GC in LawnGuyLand this was our findings.

Who makes the 'wholemeal' guitars? And can I get one that sounds the musical equivalent of processed cheese slices? Choice is what we want.

bapu mike_mccue You see.... I knew it could easily be proven. Did that really happen? You'll have to ask Philz. But I'm prone to say yes. 'Tis true, and we found one of the cheaper Taylors to sound more pleasant (to us anyway) than several of the more expensive ones. I think it was a 110CE. Separately, I've heard that 4 out of 5 dentists prefer Gibsons, but I've never sought to verify that... mostly because... well, who cares?

I guess what happened is that I read your story and then just a few days ago a friend from a whole different circle of friends said the exact same thing to me. It was Deja Vu I guess.

mike_mccue I have been informed that Martins are dark, Taylors are bright, and Gibson are in between. What do you think? best regards, mike Well, all I can say is, someone can pluck a single note, without me looking their way, and I can tell you if it's a Martin. There's something about the sound of a Martin that just resonates right through me. Some of the new Taylor's I've been hearing are starting to sound like Martin's. But, for the same price, why buy a Taylor when, well, you could have a Martin? If you ever get in the eastern PA area it is well worth the trip to the factory. You can take a tour of the building/shop, there's a museum, and 2 guest rooms that have a lot of different Martins you can play. One room is regular models and the other is the high end room. They keep the high end room locked and escort you in. Wish they had more than 1 lefty model to play.

For the most part, I think it's people trying to be helpful. I'm not a guitar player, so I can't prove or dispute anything, but I was wondering if people are talking about personal axes or are they talking about recordings where you have mics and equipment that may affect the sound.

I just tried two sets of strings back to back on a Martin OM guitar. It has a 25.5" scale so the string tension is higher than on the Martin 000 or a Gibson type. I don't know enough about Taylor. 12 - 54s have great tone but are so high tension that I didn't really dig in to the strings with my attack... so it's seems unnatural to coax the "tone" out of them. 10 - 52s have good tone and the tension feels very playable. errata...

While mike was playing his Martin I was simulating it by playing air guitar. Whereas his sounded better, I think my moves were cooler.
