Distortion when recording

I have a problem with distortion which sounds rather like clipping when I am recording an audio track. If I listen to the audio track whilst I am recording it is "clean" and there is certainly no sign that it is running out of headroom.

When I play the recorded audio back it is seriously degraded - very "choppy" but this is not clipping. There is plenty of headroom in the track.

I have other tracks created using Midi and VSTi's and they are playing fine. The problem only occurs when I try to record audio through the Mic input of my M-Audio FW410. I have swapped the FW410 out for another interface but the problem persists which leads me to think that it is a SONAR issue, not an interface issue.

I have also tried swapping the driver from WDM/KS to ASIO and there is no change to the problem.

Any suggestions?

Well, the volume level when recording is controlled by your interface, not Sonar.  Sounds like you're not being aware of what the signal really sounds like until after you've recorded it.

I've solved the problem! The WDM/KS driver was the villain here. It was fine playing back tracks created by bouncing midi tracks through a VSTi, but failed miserably as soon as I tried to record audio through my M-Audio FW410. I swapped to ASIO drivers and all the grief went away. It is now behaving perfectly. :-)
