When I was a Child...
My parents took me to Washington DC. I was so young that I really don't remember it. I have a few old pictures of me at that time. So.... when we had the opportunity to go to DC, I jumped at the chance. My daughter is working up in the suburbs this summer, and she has been into the city with her job a few times and she also goes in on weekends with some co-workers. She acted as our tour guide. So here are a few of the many pics I took with my cell phone. we got into and out of DC on the Metro, and also got around the city this way. Union station was a very impressive building This place holds your copyrights... it is The Library of Congress. It sets across the street behind the Congress.... an underground tunnel connects them. Actually, underground tunnels connect lots of buildings in DC. The US Congress building lots of marble was used to build this place. The Washington Monument... probably the most recognized thing in the city On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King stood to give his most famous "I have a dream" speech. Standing where history happened all day long. No.... I didn't pee on it.... a park ranger poured water on it so it was easier to see. As we approached the White House, the Secret Service shut it down and told us to clear out. No reason was given. So as we were walking across the field towards the other monuments, I saw a chopper coming in. It approached DIRECTLY over us at only several hundred feet...decending onto the front lawn of the White House. It was there to deliver the POTUS to camp David. A few minutes later it came back over again with BHO onboard but we were unable to get a good shot of it due to trees over us. My daughter and tour guide. I have more pics of the rest of the family but I will spare you most of that. . OK.... enough boring pics.... we had a good time, and walked....and walked......and walked....... and then walked some more. Then, after we went to a church that my daughter had attended.... (in the basement of a coffee house)..... I asked as we were walking back to the Metro station, if anyone wanted to walk over to the Jefferson Memorial..... I got dirty looks..... oh well.... another trip is on order... but not any time soon. .

Law and the SS were crawling all over the mall. Damn.... just realized that SS was the same abbreviation Hitler had for his elite warriors..... and I'll bet ours are just as friendly too.

It was actually a better experience than I thought it would be. The city was clean, we rode the metro in and out so parking was a non-issue, and free at the metro station. I still do not like cities..... give me a small town or somewhere out in the woods and I'm in heaven. My daughter kept telling me she really "loved" the city and was thinking about moving there after college...... where did I go wrong?

I guess you're also going to blame me for the wet spot? I get blamed for everything! Herb - I went to DC when I was in high school. our high school band went to a "show" where there were several high school bands performing on the lawn of the WH. we got to see all of the memorials and even got to go to one of the Smithsonian museums. Our group chose the one with the space and aerospace stuff in it. it was pretty cool.

Reece... you mean this place? You can see The Spirit of St Louis behind the rocket. We ducked in here to eat lunch. My daughter knew they have a McDonald's inside, so after going through an almost TSA like security check point, we grabbed some burgers and a drink, before we headed to the Capital Building for a tour of Congress. I would have loved to have a few hours to wander around more. The front reminded me a lot of NASA in Fla & Houston with the space exhibits. .

I have 3 boys and 1 adopted girl (all grown now). the girl could not have been more disinterested in stuff like that, but the boys I took to NASA in Houston and to the Rocket museum in Huntsville, Alabama and they LOVED it! (I've been to NASA in florida myself, but not with the family). I've also taken the family to several air shows. the boys always love that stuff - the girl - not so much.

My daughter kept telling me she really "loved" the city and was thinking about moving there after college...... where did I go wrong? How we gonna keep them down on the farm? Drove through DC on the drive from NC to Dover AFB, Delaware when we went to Germany the second time. Didn't stop, but we saw the Capitol as we drove by.

I'm sure you're proud of her, in spite of your "small town vs. big city" debate. I suppose the good news for CH is that we can expect more photos in the future.

Great pics. We were just there several months ago and hit all of the museums in the area. It was a long but fun day. I did spend an inordinate amount of time in the air and space museum.....Love the stuff. We rode to within 10 miles and took the metro, much better than attempting to drive directly there. After we returned a friend of mine more familiar with the area informed me that the REAL space museum with better stuff is located somewhere around the airport. This will be the one they retire the shuttle in and I believe the blackbird is there too...........guess I'll need to make another trip.

You might want to clean it off before you wind up getting a call. I can see your daughter's concern, now.
