New SONAR X1 based studio
If you were building a new studio and had a rectangular space 6 x 4 metres with 2.7 metre ceiling. Concrete slab floor, and cement rendered double brick walls. Ceiling acoustic tiles. No external windows only 1 point of entry with air recirculated and airconditioned when necessary. I can use traps and other sound tailoring devices as I like but: How would you apportion Control room and studio room out of this one space? I know the post will get moved but maybe some guys who's opinions I value will get time to leave a post with a suggestion.
Mike V. (MUDGEL) STUDIO: Win 10 Pro x64, SPlat & CbB x64, PC: ASUS Z370-A, INTEL i7 8700k, 32GIG DDR4 2400, OC 4.7Ghz. Storage: 7 TB SATA III, 750GiG SSD & Samsung 500 Gig 960 EVO NVMe M.2. Monitors: Adam A7X, JBL 10” Sub. Audio I/O & DSP Server: DIGIGRID IOS & IOX. Screen: Raven MTi + 43" HD 4K TV Monitor. Keyboard Controller: Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88.

I've built two garage studios. One 2 car garage and my current 2-1/2 car garage. The first one devoted most of the space to the recording room which was a mistake. I spent most of my time working by myself or with one or two artists in a super cramped controll room looking through a glass at an empty recording space. My current situation is reversed. I have an Iso Booth where my amps and artists live and my relatively large control room where I have enough room to deal with wall reflections and space between me and the rear reflections. I make this set up work because most times I am dealing with solo artists. I can do bands but they have to do things my way.

I'd start measuring and then hang some diffusers. Then print the graph from 300hz and down warths and see what you've measured.

Mike. With that sort of space at your disposal, I'd go for a single room with an iso booth tucked away in a corner. 6 x 4 isn't that big unfortunately, and you'll lose a hell of a lot of it if you go down the control room/live room/iso booth route, not just by adding extra walls but also by having to put a serious amount of acoustic treatment in. I'm currently looking at a plot which might be about 7.3 x 7.3, and I'm thinking one room baby - one room plus iso. And it'll be cheaper as well as easier to tame acoustically.

By iso booth I'm guessing you guys are talking about a space big enough for vocals or maybe a live drum kit. So where you traditionally would have your mixing position against a wall with a window in it with a view of the studio I'd leave the equipment in the same relative positions but leave out the seperating wall/window. that would still allow me to see the talent and the computer video monitors at the same time. So instead of the floor space behind me at the mix position, a greater part of it would be infront of the mix position.??

That's my understanding of it. Obviously you still need to treat your space with suitable, er, treatments, like diffusers/absorbers/resonators etc. But I have read about guys who have built separate CR/LR/ISO studios and have ended up ripping it all out because of the difficult to tame acoustics of a small room and have subsequently really enjoyed their space a lot more than they did.

By iso booth I'm guessing you guys are talking about a space big enough for vocals or maybe a live drum kit. It's been my experience that you don't have enough room for a great drum sound. Usable, more like tolerable will be your best result. (I have recorded drums in both of my studios and I've got compliments on my drum sound but not from anyone who would really know what a great drum sound is.) Great drum sounds need space for the sound to develope and distance from reflections so that those don't color the sound. I've sold my drum kit and I am concentrating on using an Alternate Mode TrapKat and Toontrack Superior Drummer libraries. My iso booth will barely fit a 5 piece kit (with normal hardware) in there. Drums are doable but a bit of a pain in the neck.

Agreed with everyone else. There's been a general shift away from the larger live room to the larger control room, heck even Peter Gabriel's Real World is centered on a gigantic console smack in the middle of his HUGE live room.

I don't play drums myself and figured I might just make the iso booth big enough for an electronic kit as I use all the Toontrack software for writing, playing and drum replacement of previously recorded acoustic drum tracks. It suits me to just have one larger room. With a little revision of my layout I can get an L shaped room of 30 square metres. Would an ISO booth 2 x 3 metres be sufficient?

For vocals I reckon you'd easily get away with 2 x 3 and it's an ideal place to put loud guitar cabs, brass players etc - just don't deaden it TOO much. Leave room for the air in there to breathe. Maybe 2 walls treated and 2 semi-treated. Don't kill off all the highs. For drums, I was thinking about simply building a drum riser at one end of the room. This will help to kill off vibration if you mount it on neoprene, or even this stuff which seems to be gaining in popularity

Mod Bod: I went to your website and had a few questions.......where did you get the desk and the 2 racks on each side (where your NS10's and hardware mixer are set)? Also what type of iso booth do you use? I like your setup!

[;0] All kidding aside, I'm a professional plastics fabricator and own a 6000 sf facility called Plastics America - www.plasticsamerica.com I designed the desk using available CAD software and cut out the shapes with my CNC router and glued and nailed it together. EDIT: I failed to mention that I built out my studio myself and the ISO is built into the room within a room design. The Iso Booth floor floats over densely packed rock wool and the walls are built over that base. It's not absolutely isolated but it is workable for a home studio situation. Whatever you build - you must consider that you may have to tear it all out someday if you sell your home.
