Where am I going wrong with mastering?

My story: Sythn drums and other instruments, record guitar, bass, and vocals.
Have the" heart "of the song, but, missing loads of dynamics.
Using Ozone 4 as Mastering Tool.

Typical example is:www.moriartysmusic.fourfour.com

Please listen to "No Feelings"
It has no "Ummph"

    Bad link.

Just to help you and this is not aimed as a criticism.  If the mix is not right no end of mastering will correct it.

Mastering started out as something done for vinyl to:-

1 Ensure that the grove did not cause excessive excursions for the stylus on a record deck.  Which would result in distortion and possible jumping.

    2. To ensure that the overall sound of an album was balanced and of equal volume.

Now it is primarily to perform the second function.  It is also unfortunately done to get it sound as painfully loud as possible and bury any dynamics.

Get the mix right and the mastering is just the "gloss" as Mr McQ would say.

I don't know about mastering but it seems the vocal is a bit too loud and the song lacks dynamics. It's like all one volume. Was any volume automation used on any tracks/buses? Did you use any compression/limiting on any tracks or buses?

I'd like to hear it without the Ozone used on it for comparison. The vocal seemed off pitch in a lot of places in an almost "punk" kind of way. Was this intentional?

Having followed Chappel's link, thanks for that Chapple, +1 to all he has to say.  I think you need to get the mix right before you think about mastering.

I also turned it down it -8.9 on the mixer so it did not distort.

Thanks for your input Wookie and Chappel. Apart from a non existent link, and long delay in thanks to your response, I hope this experience has no reflection on Cake?Rolands customer service. I need to go back to "the very basics".

Unless I totally misunderstand you this forum is only provided by Cakewalk they very rarely stick their noses in unless there is a breach of TOS or they have some music to share.  Other than that all the contributors are here just for the music and it shared experience.  I suspect that most are cake product users but I know that is not the case for all the contributors.

It is worth sticking around there are many useful contributors armature and professional alike.
