Problems with imported MIDI

So, I imported a BIAB midi file, and it worked fine except:
--When I attempted to edit it, the smart tool wasn't working--i.e. the arrow just hovered, and wouldn't select anything.  This behavior was only on the imported material, data on other tracks was normal.
--I created a new track, cut the bass drum and pasted to that track to see if I could edit on the new track. Paste seemed to work, but when I hit play, X1 crashed.
Any ideas?

    What is BIAB?

By the way, regarding your picture, existentialists think Sisyphus was happy because he always had a purpose.  Not saying I agree—just saying.

I do agree, actually.  However, I define work as that which I would not do if I were not being paid.  I don't mind pushing the rock as long as I decide which rock to push.

Well, I think I solved this, sorta.   At one point I dragged the drum track into the step sequencer.  It was after that, I realized, that  it became uneditable in piano roll. So I wiped the drum track and re-imported it, and it behaved normally.

As to why dragging a track into the step sequencer makes it uneditable in PRV, or why copying said track and pasting it crashes the program, well, I dunno...

Step Sequencer clips are intended to be edited using only the Step Sequencer interface vs. the PRV.   I think it's always been like that.   But you can also bounce them to regular MIDI clips.

Yes, the Step Sequencer was programmed to create and use its own proprietary kind of files - for some reason.  Odd that they aren't standard MIDI files that can be worked over like regular MIDI clips.  I've seen this sort of ?? come up numerous times in regard to using the Step Sequencer.

I wondered the same thing - but then I thought that one could play mayhem with the Step Sequencer by just tweaking a little bit in the piano roll - what would the SS do with a little bit of swing?
I think the SS is a great starting point - but may be a little rigid on purpose!

According to Sonar X1 Power: "Step Sequencer clips...can't be edited by any of the other views in SONAR unless you convert them to MIDI clips first."  Guess that settles that.
