New Distant Towers song, "27, you're not readable"

Hello Sonarians (ahem....make that Cakers, don't want to leave non-Sonar users out)

The DT madness continues with a strange audio/video duo.  Call it Distant Towers lite if you wish.  A song idea that wasn't deemed worthy of full development.  We liked the groove of it though and decided to let it stand as is, therefore becoming DT's first instrumental.

In addition Tom jumped at the chance to practice his video making/editing skills and generated a "down and dirty" video for the tune.  Although Tom is quick to point out that he expects better of himself, he acknowledges that this video is also a DT first in that all the footage was shot by Distant Towers.  I thought it was interesting and talked him into sharing it.

So, if you are looking for a quirky break from your day, we'd like to hear your thoughts about this song and video (good or bad).  As a huge Rush fan, I can assure you...this ain't no YYZ or La Villa, not even close!

We liked the drum loop on this tune so we stuck with it.....plus Preston was busy working on Fractured Pieces at the time.

The line up:
Tom McCaffrey:  Synths, audio clips, Sonar mixing.
Tony Wood:  Guitars
We liked the drum loop on this tune so we stuck with it.....plus Preston was busy working on Fractured Pieces at the time.

Thanks for taking the time to listen.  We hope everyone is doing well.

Very cool new DT...I really liked the drum groove too but it got to be a little much...Maybe I wouldn`t have noticed if there were some of those great DT vox on this...But hey i enjoyed it and the vid was pretty cool too for a First try.

Hi guys, not bad at all, video and tune . The part at 2:15 with just guitar and bass sounds a bit underdeveloped, started to miss that high pitched whine that annoyed me the first minute. I like the ending with the voices.

Is that kind of like "Trance" music or "Pyschedelic - however it is spelled"?

Alan, yea this is a n odd lil fellow but for some reason both Tony and I took a liking to it...its really not a stand-alone tune but for some reason  we don't want to work it beyond this point...so here she sits..lol

Rik - I giggled when you said you started to miss the whining-sound that irritated you at the beginning...I couldn't help to think of my wife..lamo

LMAO @ James....I was thinkin how to get the thing pointed in that direction...lol Really that was just a super quick take and somehow Tony and I just let it fall to the floor...but I'm sure the tune will be featured on a CD down the line as a bridge tune something akin to something Floyd would do on  "The Wall"

Space, its just a weird lil goofy tune...we'll slip it in between something more poppy on a CD some where down the road. I think it would go good after Fractured Pieces (posted here)

    http://www.soundclick.com...&q=hi&newref=1

Not sure what other tune would work as a third tune

    Thanks for the listen!

I opted for the Youtube video, and was glad I did... cool stuff.  I can see why you guys couldn't let this piece go: it has a certain 'infectiousness' about it, and the video worked really well with the music.  I've had many a simialr piece of material that I got all ga-ga over, but never did anything with it.  Good for you guys that you stuck it out and found a way give this tune life.  Definitely worth it... I really enjoyed it.

X, it's not just for young people anymore :-) I like it. It's very trancey and atmospheric, which is always a good thing in my opinion. Maybe you can change your band name to "The Chemical Colleagues" or something. The drum loop definitely keeps it driving forward at all times, which is kind of a nice offset to the most languid bits.

the vid has quite a Madchester feel to it, and parts of the music do too...so a good combo. the drum groove was ok but didn't like the sound of the kick much. nice guitaring.

    Hello guys,

Cool moody groove.  I think the snare is a bit weak (pitch) and drums lack punch in general...i know it's a loop but maybe some eq or comp.  Guitar is cool but being a 'trancy' type piece i think i nice fat verb tail on the lead would be interesting.
Just rambling here...i enjoy your daring ventures into the sonic unknown.

    Hey, Tony and Tom,

Wow, I almost missed this one, but I'm sure glad I didn't.

As always, a very clever, sonically rich, interesting instrumental, and the video was way cool!  Yeah, I think that this would definitely work very well sandwiched as a bridge between two of your killer DT gems.

    Great work, guys!

DT or not DT ? That is the question.

DT Lite is a most accurate description. Seems a little odd to hear your stuff with looped drums, but it works on the whole. I can imagine it as an intro track to an album to be immediately followed by a proper full on DT tune. Almost like a very extended intro. Video is simple, but still interesting enough and fits the style.

I listened first and read later.  I was laughing at Tom for forgetting to include the vocal tracks.  Oops, I then read the story.  LOL.  I watched the video and watched it all.  It was mesmerizing.  Of course I was waiting for Tom to step up to the mic.  :-)  Really a trippy tune, guys.

Thanks for all the great input folks, it is very much appreciated!  The critiques are always useful (and welcome) and the other, non-mix related musings are always enjoyable.  It is very interesting (as one who does it often hisself) to see the various comparisons made to either music genres and/or other people's music.  Tom and I hope that this video will be the push we need to start doing more of the footage ourselves for future vids.  More tunes are coming.  We have one that should drop in about 8 days (Tom is on vacation) and Preston is working on another one right now that could come sometime before late August.  We are hoping to all three get together live and work on a tune before too long also.

I want to apologize for being absent from the forum so much.  I have listened to a few songs but unable to post.  I will try to get back in here and give some listens.  I am always inspired by all of our resident songsters and the cool creations they post.  Of course my few posts don't make or break a forum, I just didn't want to be someone who only posts his music and doesn't participate otherwise.  Nuff said.

Hope everyone is well and staying cool (well, if it is summer where you are).

    See ya!

This is nice little curio, I enjoyed it. Video is suitable moody and oblique for the track. For some reason the tune brought to mind an obscure band called Freur.

Nicccccccccccce! I was feeling more of a RUSH vibe off of this piece. Funny, how a simple drum beat can capture your attention but lead you in so many directions. I couldn't stop listening because I want to hear what was next.  GREAT artistic view on the video also. I know this sounds funny but the music & video combined left me with this "Cirque Du Soleil" vibe and once you go CIRC you never go back to RINGLING BROS. KUDOS!!

Thanks for taking the time to listen and watch folks.  Much appreciated!  It is only fitting that an obscure band like DT should remind someone of another obscure band, LOL.

Tom should get the credit with taking what was a little guitar idea and with a few light touches, turning it into something more.  Quirky but we like em that way.
