Noise when I plug in my laptop power cord

Was wondering if anyoone else has had this problem.  Am new to Sonar-Essential.  Have a Tonelab ST, small practice amp and a Dell laptop.  Everything works well together, able to record, playback, etc., but when I plug in the computer power cord, I get an irritating interference noise out of my amp.  No problem when I use just external speakers or headphones.  Have tried plugging the computer (and amp) into separate power circuits.  Have disabled wireless.  Would appreciate any suggestions.

it's more than probable an earth loop. it's to do with the electrical wiring.

are you using a gang socket ? to split the wall socket into 4 etc ? you might find thats a problem.. but sometimes the laptop adapter itself has issues with the grounding .

you can get things like a ground loop isolator.

the ones I've fixed for others are normally a cheapo power splitter / adapter as the cause of issue.

    That's exactly the problem...
    Use a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter is a temp solution... but it's not a good long-term stategy.
A DI box can also be used to safely lift the ground (eliminating the ground-loop).

I agree its probably a ground loop, However I had similar issues with an older laptop I had, (I knew it wasn't a ground loop), And it turned out that it was the power supply itself! Got a replacement and the buzz went away..

The last house we lived in was new and was very noisy. I started to dig. Part of the problem was the power coming into the house. I could wak under the power cabe coming from the pole to the house with an AM radio and it would buzz like a saw. I called the power company, they came out, I showed them, they checked the pole, replaced something there and it got went away (under the wires).. however it was still noisy inside. I dug deeper and found that every ground wire in every receptacle and switch in the house was loose... really loose. I went through them all, tightened all the connections and that fixed it.

You might try running an extension cord, if needed, from an outlet that is on a different breaker and use it to power your laptop, that might fix it.

I use power conditioner type surge protectors where I am now and they seem to work well. The power here is dirty too but it is all underground. I can drive down the road and there is an section of road where I cannot use the AM radio in my truck because of the overhead lines... still, I am sure that is a different issue from yours but noise is noise and sometimes the power company will try to fix it if it is causing you a problem.
