It's so hard to say goodbye...
To survive until the money from our startup business begins to come in, I've sold a LOT of gear over the last two plus years... but it doesn't get any easier! Next up on the block will be my Roland XV-5080 ROMpler with a few extra cards in it, but it seems like I've made every excuse possible not to actually get it listed! Tonight I finally hooked it up and demo'ed things and boy did it sound good... I keep telling myself how much better the new soft-synths and samples have gotten, but I still find my self procrastinating when I should have had this thing listed and sold about a month ago! Anyone else have a LOT of difficulty selling gear? I guess I'll need to sell it soon, eating has become such a habit for me...
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Sorry to hear about you having to say goodbye to an old friend. Best of luck with it. Wish I had the money to buy it and sell it back to you later on. Oh, well.

Craig, A little over eight years ago I too suffered a serious financial setback and had to sell my studio. The only things of value I was able to keep were my Alembic bass, my Solid Tube and C414 mics and my Strat. Everything else went for pennies on the dollar. I was seriously hardware and ADAT based then. Today I have no external hardware (save for mic pre's) and I'm a happy camper. The change was a good one for me.

Craig it sounds as if you really value the Roland and I can see why. I hope you are able to keep it. What you can get for it might not justify losing it....just sayin'.

That's what's weird... I really don't value it THAT much and personally can't wait to be able to replace it with the much better quality samples that are now out there. It's just that I can't stop procrastinating doing all the crap required to sell it (pictures, ad-copy, listing, dealing with idiots who are trying to scam me but have no clue of English, etc.). Procrastinating is the only activity I'm motivated in doing right now.

I wanted to sell an old yamaha psr keyboard and 'upgrade' it to an MM6. well. I found the MM6 at a great price at a pawn shop 'round the corner, but I've had the MM6 for 2 months now, so I didn't exactly sell the PSR in order to "upgrade" it (at least that's what I told Mrs. Beagle!). I finally put it and a bunch of other stuff on ebay and CL just 2 days ago after procrastinating for months. the part I really dread will come in a week when I have to box stuff up and mail it.

mike_mccue What is your start up business Craig? We're primarily an engineering firm in the alternative energy field. Kind of like the BASF ads from awhile back, we don't make the turbines, we just make 'em better! This is our website: www.energeticdrives.com It's the first actual website I've ever created so it's done at the height of 90's technology (we'll get some pimply-faced kid who knows ten times more about websites than I do to redo it once we can afford to). I've also lost about 15 pounds since the horrible picture that's on there - and need to lose about 20 more I think. Anyway, we're seeing tons of opportunity, we just need to realize it! Our two year anniversary was last month. When you add the month of planning that took place before we became a company, it's now been 26 months of work (70-90 hours every week) - without pay. We've received deposits from customers, but need to use that to buy parts and equipment for the projects. Our first deposit that we can use for salaries should come in on the third week of August - THAT will be a relief... Still, I think we did pretty good to get a startup off the ground during a depression without any outside funding!

I keep telling myself how much better the new soft-synths and samples have gotten, Have they? Do you get the same response and feel from the "new soft synths" et al as the 5080 ? I sure don't. i dunno, maybe it's my computer. All the new stuff may "sound "pristine and "better" but, ,,,,,,,,,

Interesting company, Craig. I am sure that all the sacrifices you're enduring today will ultimately be worth it. After all, gear is just gear, but dreams are priceless. Hang tough, my friend! I couldn't help noticing that despite the impressive talent, experience, education and skills amassed in your organization, I'm surprised that there does not appear to be a single photographer among you... For a bunch of geniuses, you guys look kinda scary.

Yikes! Had to post those did ya? We're an engineering firm, not a design firm bit so no flashy photographer... Until we have enough projects going and people to cover everything, along with a new facility (could be as soon as late September), there isn't much time to clean up the website (or our ugly mugs). What's more impressive is my "hat" collection. Ian's the sales guru, head of engineering and the virtual CEO (we're an LLC not an Inc.) - he's great with customers and concepts but not so much with organizing and details. The two Ukrainian brothers concentrate on engineering plus R&D and the guys not shown generally have one function. Frank is primarily a business consultant and will be taking over purchasing from me soon. Me? I'm pretty much everything else. If we were incorporated, I'd be the COO, CFO and CIO... I get to create all the marketing materials which includes my PhotoShop and voice-over fun, handle all the finances and purchasing, do all the portfolio, program & project management, handle all the IT work and mathmatical modeling, share a business analyst role with Ian and sometimes Frank, take care of the Enterprise Content & Human Resource areas and, on top of it all, I do most of the administrative assitant work as well! Too many hats... Next month I should be able to hire some help for the office including a sharp girl who's great on the phones and tri-lingual (she's already helped us as a translator with our Central American customers). I'd hire her for her abilities and Ian would because of her looks (win-win I guess). We'll have to get her picture on our marketing material and bring her to trade shows like the big boys do. Anyone want to buy a hat?

When it didn't sell I just decided to keep it. Best decision I could have made. I keep thinking about all of the old stuff I sold and wish I had kept most of it.
