Problem with Sonar X1 (when theer is more than 2 GB RAM)
Hi, i have this problem: when i start to work in Sonar, after few minutes my output goes down, there is enormous distorsion on speakers. I've tried many combinations. Configuration is: Win XP 32-bit, Sonar X1 producer, Creative live 5.1, asio4all, intel chipset, 4 GB RAM. When i remove one memory modul, all works fine. Problem is when there is more than 2 GB RAM... I've tried difrent motherboard, change drivers, switch to win 7 (there is a problem with asio driver and midi (game) port)... so, i need a solution for 32-bit XP.

Welcome to the forum! Maybe the other memory unit is broken or the pair is not matching? Anyways, your OS can only use 3+ gigas of RAM. There usually are problems of some kind with Creatives consumer level/gaming cards (Soundblasters). Some of them default to 48 kHz sample rate, which must be noted doing SONARs settings, and many of them don't have/work with ASIO drivers, which are the most recommended ones, but like you have done, many get by with ASIO4ALL. Don't select the integrated soundcard for anything in SONAR.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Do not just buy one new chip. Get matching pairs of ram. Look for the memory test utility from Microsoft. Use the intensive test, I have had an OK for memory chips in the standard mode. Having said that, I upgraded from 1 to 2GB on an Asus laptop and suddenly had random crashes whenever I stopped recoding, despite the fact that the memory test always ran through correctly. I had to go back to the standard 1GB ram.

Memory moduls are matched. I've tried with different (also matched) and same problem turns out... Works only when there is less than 2 GB (Example, 2x1GB works well). Also i've installed this Sound blaster on another PC, which have 1 GB RAM, and there is no problem.

The sound card you have is relatively old. Probably most of your problems are with the old Soundblaster. Best option is to get a separate audio recrording device -e.g. a two channel USB connected device and use that. You will be much better off. $150 or less and you get a USB device that is far superior to the old SoundBlaster.

Then I can only suggest it is a problem with the memory addressing hardware on that PC for a memory location somewhere above 1GB. I suspect the same problem exists on my Asus laptop.

I've extended maxmem to 4GB in msconfig, and turn on some advanced adresing... BUT, problem realy was in ASIO4ALL driver... on MME drivers everything works without crashes, but problem is the latency.... How can this be solved on this card? On 20msec out works ok, not so much crackling, but under hand is not so quite good.... to slow response. What techniques do you use to speed up? Is there some software, virtual cables...? i dont know...

I don't think you can get low latency with MME drivers, they are the weakest there are and usually only used with the integrated soundchip (have you checked that it's the SB you're using, not the intgrated chip?). Try WDM. Actually, I wouldn't say the problem is the ASIO4ALL, because it's the driver type that usually works with whatever you throw it in, I'd say it's the Soundblaster that is the problem, it's simply outdated. I don't know if ASIO was even introduced when Live!5.1 came out. It was designed 13 years ago, You need a soundcard that supports ASIO.

Interesting. Try using ASIO4All over WDM - assuming WDM drivers exists for Creative/SoundBlaster. If this works, I might try reinstalling my 2GB chip.

With WDM ana MME i have problem with latency and crackling. With ASIO4ALL this problem is not present, but my output crashes (maybe its the problem in SB). Now i've instaled KX drivers, latency is good, but i dont know exatcly how to configure KX drivers; i've changed some basic options and now i can record midi, but audio is problem. Another thing, when i record something and play it later, i can see that there is notes recorded, but only hear few of them, maybe every 10. Some problem with output... When play some VST through midi port, everything is ok... Anybody knows setup for this drivers and Sonar?

Well - it is said several times.. Use another sound card! You can mess around with drivers as much as you like. I think it won't help. An Sound Blaster is a great game card, but a terrible audio card (at least - the old ones are). The Sound Blaster is designed to give a good gaming environment using EAX effects. However - a "clean" output (no colouring, EAX or other gadgets) is something completely different. Really - a relatively good sound card is not that expensive. Example: If you only can use USB you can use the M-Audio Fast track USB as a "bare-bone" cheap starters card. This card is most times bundled with ProTools Essential (as "production pack") for about $50. For internal cards the E-MU and ESI cards are relatively cheap and good. And there are a lot more if you shop around a bit... Just take this advise - I am sure you won't regret it...

It always amazes me that people don't have a problem chucking a huge wad of money on their computer, and then complain when they don't get stellar performance from a 2c sound chip. DITCH THE SOUNDBLASTER!

@JClosed: It's easy you to said that, but in country where i live, it is not the case. $50 isn't small price. For example, here Fast Track costs 120 euros. And it is a best offer... I'm not asking information for the new sound card, i'm asking information for this card. And this can be done. You will see that in next sentence.. @Bristol_Jonesey: I'm not understand exactly your slang, but i have a hint. So, while you've been amazed, i solved this problem with kx drivers and everything works fine. I'm not complainer, i'm a problem solver. Best regards. Thanks JazzSinger, Fireberd and Kalle, and sorry for my mistakes in language.

Strinskipper, we don't mean to be rude, but the point in critisizing the SB is that if you spend over 300 euros for X1 Producer (or how much more does it cost in your contry?), one might expect you to be able spend a few euros for the soundcard. Possibly you could have bought X1 Studio and a proper soundcard for the same price you spent for Producer - assuming you did spend anything. We don't know where you live, so our advice goes just according to what usually works and what does not.

ASIO4All is not a driver in and of itself; it is a wrapper around other drivers, like WDM, and makes them look like ASIO to the program. I also have problems using WDM directly, yet somehow ASIO4All prevents crashing and crackling (Perhaps ASIO4All has additional buffering or timing? I don't know. Always been a mystery to me) So if you are not having crashes anymore, then it is time to start looking at your PC. You do not say what type of processor you have. You also do not explain in what way only every 10 notes are heard. It is highly unusual for it to behave as you describe. More normal is for Sonar to just stop (audioengine cannot keep up) and for there to be a lot of crackling in the sound. Edited: must learn to read post thoroughly next time.

I've never heard of kx-drivers before (took a quick look at their site now), but nice you got things working. The problem with the missed MIDI-notes might be solved by raising the MIDI prepare buffer. (MIDI buffers...prepare using). This problem became very, very common after version 8.

MIDI is broken?!? Well, that explains the problems I'd been having with DimPro in 8.5 Cakewalk have a lot to fix.
