Why does Sonar find VstPlugins not in defined paths
I purchased and installed iZotope Ozone 4. Suddenly Sonar X1b startup time went from 5 seconds to well over a minute. Since Ozone is in any case recommended for mastering, I decided to copy the dlls into a separate directory for now; C:\VstMastering. To my surprise, when I call up vst plugins for a track (rightclick in FX bin), I STILL see iZotope! And if I click on it, it STILL installs Ozone! I checked my paths. There are only two: the one in Cakewalk itself and C:\VstPlugins How is this possible? How does Sonar know where to look for plugins?

If I recall correctly Ozone installs both a DX version of the plugin which is registered to the system and not included on a VST scan, as well as a VST version of the DLL. If you want to control just the VST version in the way you describe then uninstall Ozone and re-install it only selecting the VST version otherwise the DX version will show up on any app that supports DX plugins (which are handled differently to VST's) If you want to speed up Sonar's start time select not to scan at startup and just remember do a scan when you add new VST plug-ins. Having the DX version will not affect VST scan times as it is installed into the windows registry at install time. IOWs don't fret it.

Ah, yes. There is an iZotope directory in \Programs, and there is a DX file in there.
And as you say, the DX version is not slowing down Sonar's startup time.

Right, and Jonbouy was also pointing out that you don't need to wait for a long scan when you open up Sonar - not ever. Under Global Options>VST Plug-ins, un-check the default setting of "Scan For VST Plug-ins On Startup." Just trigger a scan yourself after you've installed more FX or instruments, and do that after you've opened Sonar. Randy B.

I've noticed too, within sonar I find plugin's from band in the box, Nero, Vegas, etc...
I've wonderer about this too, though I've not checked to see if they are also DX or VST's

you can also check the plugin manager, it distinguishes between dx/vst iirc, and it has been known for overly sticky registry entries to cause the pm to keep showing uninstalled plugs

DX plugins installed by other programs such as Nero will show up in the list, even if they incompatible with SONAR. I just go into the plugin manager and exclude them so they don't clutter my plugin menu.
I have also excluded the DX version of Ozone, since you can get weird behavior if you accidentally insert both the VST and DX versions into the same project.
 All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff
