Ancient Footprints Show Human-Like Walking Began Nearly 4 Million Years Ago ScienceDaily (July 19, 2011) — Scientists at the University of Liverpool have found that ancient footprints in Laetoli, Tanzania, show that human-like features of the feet and gait existed almost two million years earlier than previously thought. Many earlier studies have suggested that the characteristics of the human foot, such as the ability to push off the ground with the big toe, and a fully upright bipedal gait, emerged in early Homo, approximately 1.9 million years-ago. Liverpool researchers, however, in collaboration with scientists at the University of Manchester and Bournemouth University, have now shown that footprints of a human ancestor dating back 3.7 million years ago, show features of the foot with more similarities to the gait of modern humans than with the type of bipedal walking used by chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas http://www.sciencedaily.c...11/07/110719194356.htm

I find the use of the statistical modeling (computer modeling) fascinating … but ultimately, I suspect this comment:

will lead to much bapu related humor (or more accurately, non-humor).

which religions is it, that this new data shoots in the foot.....?
i know there are several......
My business partner (the Welsh hobbit) will think it's complete rubbish considering his religion tells him the Earth is only a few thousand years old. I would think that the fact that you can track Egyptian history back in a continuous line to "before the Earth was created" (at least according to his religion), might be a problem to overcome...

Interesting stuff Batsy, and on one of my favourite subjects - evolution. I'm just about to start reading this:  I've long been a protagonist of the theory that the harnessing of fire and its specific use for cooking raw meat was one of the real drivers in human advancement. I mentioned in another thread a while back that (modern) humans aren't really omnivorous in the way our distant ancestors were. In actual fact, a regular diet of uncooked or uncured meat would probably now see the rather rapid demise of our species.

Why hasn't science even figured out why the Al Capones's vault that Geraldo Rivera opend in 1986 was empty! Surly there were answers in that vault about the first foot print and definitive religious answers!
