Soft Synths--no sound!

I'm running on Windows 7 64-bit, Sonar 7 PE.

When Soft Synths are loaded, I cannot hear anything. I checked to make sure they are attached to the right MIDI track, and still nothing. However, the meter DOES indicate the synth is sending data, but no sound. Volume, etc. is all fine. I can switch to Microsoft GS wavetable and can hear the MIDI instruments just fine.

I have tried running the program as an administrator, and still nothing. I should point out I have also had a very rough time of trying to load East West software such as Colossus (Sonar refuses to load the program, though I can open it just fine outside of Sonar). But, for right now, I'd just like to get Sonar's built-in soft synths working.

To make any soft synth work you need to follow the instructions in the help files, it's very easy.
You need to select the soft synth you have loaded as the MIDI track output, you probably did not do that which is why MS wavetable worked for you.

Yup, I checked and double-checked using the help file. I went step-by-step, and still end up with no sound.

What audio device are the soft synths routed to?

assuming you have a decent soundcard set up .. 2 obvious things. make sure the track isn't muted.. and a preset selected from the synth.. not all load a default sound.. press "o" (not zero) in synth rack.. make sure you are outputting audio as well as midi..

Don't be so cocky. Sonar works beautifully if you have decent equipment and have it setup right.

Make sure the dialog that pops up when you insert a synth is set to single track instrument. If it's set on first synth audio output, that could be the problem.

Most soft synths have a preview button to listen to patches. , You can test the synth is able to make sounds this way so it rules out track issues.

I can switch to Microsoft GS wavetable and can hear the MIDI instruments just fine.

This tells me you are using MME mode which would also imply you are not using a proper audio interface. Sonar does not like using on board sound cards. It will work but with many limitations.

I disagree, why and how would it be a problem? I find the old way (separate MIDI- and audio track) more reliable.

The OP only mentions the soft synth is attached to the right MIDI-track, but does not mention anything about audio output track nor which inserting method he's using - Simple Instrument Track or separate audio output.

Anyways, to the OP: Have you inserted the soft synths via Synth Track having it automatically create the tracks needed?

Have you done turorial (#4 I think) about using soft synths?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

You would be correct sir! I have Sonar-6 STUDIO which doesn't have a simple instrument option, but was thinking about MC5 mistakenly. However, the problem may still be the reverse of what I stated about the outputs; except the issue could be that they aren't actually chosen when he inserts a synth. This may be the reason he hears nothing and is certainly a place I would troubleshoot first.

OK, so... somehow SONAR wasn't properly configured. What I did was check Options > Audio > Advanced and noticed that there was no device select for "Playback Timing Master". I don't know what that means, but selecting a device fixed the problem on restart.

Unfortunately, now I've got a whole new problem.

When I load a soft synth, and play it back, the sample sounds choppy. Furthermore, it's like the soundcard can't handle the output, because if I write a sequence of notes, it plays the first few notes, then misses the rest.

Sound device is Realtek HD Audio.

Sound device is Realtek HD Audio.

that's due to the poor drivers of the onboard realtek "soundcard" (chip on the motherboard).  go to OPTIONS>AUDIO and move the latency slider to the SAFE side.  that will increase your latency, but will reduce the popping and clicking.

my best recommendation however, is to buy a "recording soundcard".  check my website for recommendations.
