sound/general problems recording virtual instruments

Hi guys,

I am new to Sonar X1 Essentials. I have a Korg nanoPad that I use with Sonivox's Playa. It works just fine. Now I am trying to record using my pad and virtual instrument. The nanoPad is responding under playa, but it is not being pick up in Sonar (Sonar is not picking up the sound). I see the nanoPad listed in Sonar, but when I try to record, I am getting an error that the soundcard is either in use, or not found. I have a feeling it is because I am hearing the sound via Playa and it cannot work on both. Sorry for such a newbie question on hooking Midi Virtual instruments into Sonar, but I really cannot figure it out. Thanks!

Are you using the standalone version of Playa or the VSTi one inserted into a track in Sonar?

If it's the standalone, then you need to use the VSTi version. Load it into an instrument track in Sonar, and select your nanaPad in the Midi Inputs section in the Preferences box. you then record the midi data from your nanoPad into the instrument track.

Let us know if you need more detail

    Simon,

Thanks for the reply.  I am in standalone, so I guess I need help adding its folder to the "Vst scan folders" list, and having it scanned into sonar. It does not show up under the soft synths drop down box (obviously since I have yet to add it). Can you walk me through how to load the files in? I really appreciate the help.

    Thanks!

In Utilities, Cakewalk Plugin Manager, Options, click on Add and navigate to the folder where the VSTi version of the instrument is. I don't have Playa, so I don't know where this is. This will most likely be a file called Playa.dll or something similar. If you can't find it, it might tell you where to look in the manual, or you could try re-running the install program - this will probably tell you where the VST file is, or might even ask you where you want to put it - most people keep their third party VSTs in a folder e.g. Program files\VSTplugins or Prgram Files(x86)\Vstplugins

    Hope that helps

--wow, the same issue as on the last thread I just now responded to.

You should find the folder where Playa was installed - that has to be easy enough.  Go to it, find the .dll file, copy (or cut) it, and paste it into the VST Folder you should have in your master Cakewalk folder.  There's no need to keep adding new locations in the plug-in manager.  Keep all your VST .dlls in one folder inside the Cakewalk master program folder.  Then re-scan, and there your Playa will be.
