Staff View - Can only move a quarter note at a time?
Hello, I want to notate my chords, but sometimes my chords change on an 8th note but not on a quarter note. My Snap Settings are on 8th notes and they work like that in Track View but in Staff View it ignores me and just moves by quarter notes which doesn't allow me to properly notate where my chord changes are. Any help out there? Thanks in advance! Adam

I don't know if this will help but in 8.5 the Staff View has its own snap to grid settings that are independent of the track view snap to grid settings.

There is a setting about absolute value or something like that. You can put the 8th note in and it shows up as a quarter just like your experiencing. I forget the setting offhand. Just keep looking, it's there somewhere.

Try the fill durations. I think that's the one. It's in the staff view's edit list.

The Fill Durations options is what you want to have on in order to make the display in Staff View more legible, but it doesn't effect the snap. Adam, set your snap settings while you're working in Staff View if you haven't already. BUT, I think you should try what I do, maybe it will work for you as well as it does me: --Turn the grid OFF - I don't mean the Magnetism Strength off, but go up and click the grid control so it's not highlighted, - so it's off. Now try placing notes in the staves. You can tell where you are because of the Time Line, but ALSO because you can instantly tell where a note is placed by looking at the rests that appear. You can easily grab notes and re-position them if you've been a bit off. Look at everything in the staves - they guide you without the grid being on. But I find it much easier to work in the PRV where you aren't hemmed in by the limitations of stave lines, and where the graph lines make it simple pie to place notes where you want - with the grid off. Nope none of this worked guys. in the staff view I can still only click on quarter notes, yet my snap is on 16th and Fill Durations is turned off. Not sure what you mean by Grid View, i dont see that option in STAFF view. Thanks,Adam

In staff view have you adjusted the display resolution? (under the View drop down in staff view). That might be whats happening. If you enter notes without snap on it will play and place them according to time line but witll display as if quantized to 1/8th or 1/4 depending on what it is set at. (That function is useful for cleaning up the look of the printed music when completed so instead of showing a 1/8th plus 1/32 note and then a 1/16th plus 1/32 note you would set your resolution to 1/8th notes and put a note on the music to swing 8th notes)

Not sure what you mean by Grid View, i dont see that option in STAFF view. Thanks,Adam To be more clear, I should have said the Snap control in the Control Bar - I always think of that as the Grid, since it's controlling the resolution of where notes can be placed in the various views. Right click the Snap button to get the menu of note resolutions. Choose 1/8. Then, make your Display Resolution match that by clicking View in the Staff View, then Display Resolution>1/8. --Or click the Snap button so it turns off - Then you can place notes anywhere you want and you can use the Staff View's time line as a guide, and the rests that appear show you where you are in the measure. I double checked this in X1 before writing again. It definitely works, Adam. RB

I have never gotten snap to work right in Staff view. I often have to right click the note and type in the time. Once I have done that I can usually copy and paste to an 1/8 or whatever. Another new Staff bug this version: notes often appear with shorter times than they should. Example: Paste a few measures of whole notes and they appear as 2.5 beats, or someother random time. Right click each one to examine the time and then it looks right. I should complain more about the Staff view since I do 90% of my work there.

NOt sure if this helps... When I'm in staff view and want to move notes i grab the arrow in the smart tools (second to the star - F6 is the keybind). I can click and grab notes I want to move, then I "Slide" them (I have slide Keybinded to F3). This works with just about everything in staff view, Chords, Lyrics. I believe i can slide them all at once if i desire. And an FYI, if i want to move things a duration of a 8th note in the slide function, it would be 480 ticks if your project has 960 ticks per quarter note selected in Preferences

You don't need to select a different tool - You just grab a note and move it. And if you want to move things by an 8th note, that's what will happen if that's the Snap tool's resolution. Just grab, drag - . Konradh, if you have Fill Durations on under Edit, you get a more legible display and the durations will look right. But to really fine tune your lengths more accurately, you need to go to the PRV where you can (with the Snap Grid OFF)- easily change notes to any kind of length you want. That's much faster than right clicking and typing lengths. RB
