wdm / asio isssue

for whatever reason, i can track my instuments at lower latency using the wdm driver rather than asio on my ua-25 ex. this is not an issue, in fact i am well pleased with it's performance(tracking bass guitar with some soft-synth drums, and a few guitar rig instances , i can use the lowest possible buffers)
issue is this: if i close sonar in wdm mode, i get a driver error next time i open it.(driver does not support the current audio format...)
i can get wdm to work if i load the asio driver, then change it to wdm.
while this does not stop my show, i must wonder if there is something i did not set up properly, or if this is a known issue/ bug.

has this forum's wisdom any thoughts?

It seems to me there are some issues with Windows 7 64 bit and WDM drivers that I am not convinced are Sonars fault at all.

I'm using an E-Mu card which is no go in WDM mode (partly to do with E-Mu's driver) but works a treat with the ASIO driver although like you I can get a lower latency if I switch from ASIO to WDM in the same session.

Alas like you when I run Sonar again it reverts back to 16 bit so I sacrificed the small latency advantage for the stability of ASIO with Sonar.

Stranger still I can run Reason with a 64 sample buffer using the onboard chip in WDM mode routed via SP/DIF to the E-MU card... go figure.

Seems like a crap-shoot to me.

Which build are you using? I am running Quickfix 246 as something got broke in build 255 and for me it made wdm/ks unavailable... so I can't use it (Not using ASIO here)...

Is your onboard soundcard using WDM?  If so, that can cause havoc and the error message you are getting.

Good point, but my guess is the reverse - if it's using ASIO.

Disable any secondary soundcards in bios. Will probably save you a lot of other trouble too.

if any on board sounds is running, I agree, disable that and go from there-

When I have driver errors in regards to a sound card, it is usually because more than one thing is trying to use a p[articular driver-

sorry for the lag in getting back to this post, i'm having internet issues at home.
the ua25-ex is the only enabled sound device on my system.
Keni: i am using build 255 (or whatever the latest one is)
jonbouy: it seems that our systems behave similarly. i always only used the asio driver, and got stable, if not extremely fast performance from my card, i only recently discovered the wdm driver could allow me to track my guitars with 2ms buffers. this was an exciting discovery and made a difference to my approach to tracking especially bass lines. when i first set up my tower i experimented with all the possible settings and the wdm option was crap. now it is great. something changed and the only thing i can think of is w7 service pack 1. don't know enough about these matters to make a firm link.
anyroad, i dont find having to play with my settings a little too high of a price to cut my latency by about two thirds.
thanks to all for their interest and replies

Try going back to build 246... There's an easy rollback built into the quickfix scenario...

My wdm/asio issues first appeared with 255 and my driver has worked flawlessly since Sonar 1... (with no updates to this driver since a while before X1 - It is the current driver that SSL/Souindscape offers

I'm fine ut to and including 246, but not with 255...
