Crash City
WOW! Sonar X1 Producer seems to be super buggy. More crashes so far than ALL the older versions combined in my experience. Good grief--emphasis on the grief. When it works well it's great. I just have to save before every move I make--otherwise--computer brain fart paralysis and crash. Right now it's when I'm in the media browser and dealing with wav/sound files. They preview okay, but when I drop'em into a track and start adding certain effects things start crashing--even in x32. Might be because Windows 7 and x64--both new to me. Some weird activity plus freeze and crashes when I try and use 32-bit plug-in synths in x64, too. Kinna expected that, however. Definitely more programmer DDT needed! Still, the good outdoes the bad, so far. Poor programmers. I pity da fools. Lol!

Ever since X1's been released all I've been reading is complaints. Frankly, I don't run an amazing machine. It's just an i5 with 4 Gigs of Ram, 64-bit Win 7. Sonar has hardly crashed on me, expect when I try to mix on the go without an audio interface. But that's to be expected, I don't expect Realtek to handle 48Khz at 24, and anyway that isn't crashing, that's dropping out. I'm not a fanboy, but I definitely feel Cakewalk's done amazing for ten years, and this one is amazing too. Yes, X1 was buggy. So what? No software is perfect. Programmers are programmers after all. It is humanly impossible to look at every single damn possibility when you're coding. Again, yes, we try to aim for the best possible experience for the user, but oversights do happen, and the most obvious ones were quickly fixed in a and b. Now let's just hope c next month will satisfy everyone.

It keeps being a mystery why some people have so much crashes and other people (like me) hardly any (the last half year I had 3 or 4 crashes and the last one was to check if a crash of another user here could be reproduced - and it did). I have tested X1 now on three seperate (E5200, i3 540 and i3 2100) systems with three OS'es (Windows 7 32 bit, Windows 7 64 bit and Windows XP), 4 different sound cards (M-audio, ESI, E-MU, internal and external) and 3 different control devices (BCF2000, Presonus Faderport and Novation Nocturn) and had only said 4 crashes (and those where a result of bad drivers, because installing a newer driver solved the problem). I really don't know what is going on.

Say what? Defensive much? Heh, heh. Frankly I don't care what all the other users are complaining about, so thanks but no thanks for your dutiful reporting. As for Sonar X1 not crashing on you a lot, I'm so very happy for you I'm tickled pink. I've been spending money on Cakewalk stuff for a long time now. And something has to mess up a lot and repeatedly for me to report it or gripe about it in any way. I've been on here for 6 years and have only 49 posts. As far as I can remember I've haven't been complaining much. And, to be frank again, this stuff is supposed to work. If things like this don't work properly--they go away eventually. And nobody wants that. If you want to be stoic, that's your choice. Plus, get a sense a humor will ya! It was intended to be more lighthearted than you took it, I believe.

It's no mystery to me. On some operations it never crashes. I described the specific problem I was having. I use wav/sound loops VERY sparingly. Hardly at all. And I'm working around the problem, in any case. I'm totally confident that Cakewalk will fix whatever problems need fixing. I usually write scores in something else and then put the midi info in Sonar to finish them up. I've had very few problems doing that with X1 so far.
