How to I get the KORG M50 to work properly in Sonar Home Studio?
I've used various incarnations of Cakewalk for several years, using just a Midi keyboard... but now I have a KORG M50 and can't seem to get the editor working as a VSTi. Tried all sorts of things and even found an instrument definition file but the voices were completely wrong. I would very much appreciate any pointers or tips! Terence EDIT: I should have said I'm using Sonar Home Studio 7 with the XL pack

does the Korg M50 come with a VSTi? if not then you can't. at least not AS a VSTi. the instrument definition is only a visual cue for entering the patch names directly into your MIDI track if you're using the M50 as output from the MIDI track. unless the M50 comes with a VSTi then the only way you can get the M50's actual sounds is to record the audio from the M50 using your soundcard's inputs. if you want to record MIDI, edit it, then hear the M50's sounds, you can do that, but what you have to do is record the MIDI, send the MIDI output of that track back to the M50, then have the audio output from the M50 connected to your soundcard, set up an audio track in your project with the soundcard input for the M50 and arm it then hit record. that will send the MIDI data to the M50, the M50 will send audio to the soundcard and record the audio onto an audio track. only some keyboards come with a VSTi to be scanned and installed into the host software (ie SHS7). and even the ones that do, mostly they are not really a VSTi so much as they are a "wrapper" to do what I described above without you having to do anything in the project yourself.

Thank you - this is pretty much what I thought. The Korg does come with a VSTi... but this allows you to record only one of the Korg voices, unfortunately and I can't find any way to do more than that. It's possible to record other voices from other synths, though... The answer appears to be an .ins file - and I have one that somebody had written but unfortunately the voices are not in the right place and a lot of them are not even Korg voices by the sounds of them. I'm not at all sure how to write such a thing myself. Looks like I've got a bit of a problem! Thank you for your time. Terence

According to Korg's web site, the M 50 Editor comes in stand alone and VST versions. Are you using the VST version or trying to use the stand alone version in SHS?

Yes, definitely the VST version, loaded from within Cakewalk. It only allows you to use one patch though - the answere seems to be a .ins file but I have no idea how to write that...

How are you selecting the patch? In some synths you choose the patch in the MIDI track and in others you pick the patch in the synth.

I'm guessing you're saying that the VSTi for the M50 only has one channel available? if that's the case you should be able to insert more than one instance of it in your project, one for each patch you want to use. as far as the INS DEF, you can just edit it like a text file. you should have the correct patches listed in the manual for the M50 and you can just edit the INS DEF you have to make it correct.

Good news and bad news... I discovered how to do it (using sub tracks) noticed that there was a latency problem, decided to use the ASIO driver (I have a Creative X-fi sound card), whereupon Cakewalk crashed and cannot restart :( Uniinstalled, reinstalled, still crashing before I can even get it running... Ho hum. Looks like I have to go back to Cubase :(

Thanks, Greg - that's exactly what I was doing when it crashed :( I got as far as selecting 'ASIO' and clicking 'OK' and that was the last I saw of Cakewalk... tried all sorts of things to get it restarted but no luck so far. The icon is still active but the programme crashes if I try to run it. Thanks for the link, anyway.

not that you asked, but IMO the creative xfi cards are not designed for low latency recording. my best advice would be to get a "recording" soundcard for low latency. I have recommendations on my website.

Yes, I'm inclined to agree with you, so I've just ordered a 'Presonus Audiobox' audio interface. It'll make the whole process of recording to .wav or MP3 more accessible as well. Unless I can get Cakewalk kick-started though, I'll have to go back on Cubase or try the software that comes with the Presonus interface. Thanks for the advice - it confirms I _needed_ to spend the cash! (I bought two new speakers as well... ROKIT RP5s).

ROKIT RP5s Probably not the best choice... those are for playing music from an iPOD. You have to decide whether you want to do pro audio or play games and MP3s.

Oh, okay... reveiws on Amazon suggested it was pretty good, especially with a Mac. I'm intending to use it slely for getting the sounds from the M50 into the PC (you can't do it in the same way that you do with other synths) Thank you for the info!

Yeah, I have to agree - maybe dave was thinking of something else. a lot of people use the KRK's for mixing. I think the KRK's tend to hype the mids but you can learn to adjust.

My Mistake - I misread your post and thought you were talking about the Presonus. You're mistaken, though: You're right. I must have looked at a different model.
