5-year-old boy drives away in mom's van in search of candy (10:32 a.m.)

Police are investigating how a 5-year-old boy managed to drive his mother's minivan into a pole early this morning while on his way to buy candy. The boy crashed the van into a pole at around 1 a.m. near Copia and Altura streets in Central El Paso. When police arrived at the scene, the boy apparently tried to run away but officers were able to catch him. He told officers he was driving to a nearby store to buy candy. I wonder what the little boy's been fed/taught at home to go to this length just to get some candy? It would've been scary if he drove into a busy intersection.....
My children don't even get to touch the car keys (just something about that little red button) and more importantly, have learned to accept NO as a reasonable answer. Crazy times....
