Need to use Sonar for voice only - little use for music

I was thinking of buying Sonar X1 Studio.

As I searched the Internet, and YouTube videos, I'm guessing the program does cool stuff... for music, but I'm only interested in what the software can do for the spoken voice.

I've been using

-AVS4YOU Audio,
-Magix Music Editor 3, and yesterday downloaded
-Audacity 1.3 Beta.

Between all three, I have enjoyed taking the speaking voices and manipulated them somewhat to my... satisfaction?

I would like to do more to edit voices, but need to know if the cost for Sonar X1 is worth it for whatever voice tweaking features it should have that is better than the features the above programs offer.

Too, as I understand it, one or both of the other Sonar X1 versions, offer an audio editor that - I think - offers some audio features that the software I now use do not. The question here is pretty much the same: In order to get the "other" audio features, is the extra cost worth the software, of which, I would pretty much be only using for tweaking voices?

For the curious, I'm attempting to collect voices for characters in a novel I'm co-writing. The voices would be found on the story's website, and in any book trailers we make.

Thanks for any help.

Can you be more specific about the kind of editing you want to do? EQ? Compression? Pitch change? Distortion? What is it that Audacity won't do that you want to do?

And if you're considering spending that much money for an audio editor you should at least take a look at Adobe Audition before writing that check.

Thanks. I'll check Adobe Audition out.

Here's what I've been trying to do with the software.

So, already I'm getting the feeling that what I've got pretty much covers the audio-tweaking features that Sonar offers.

One of Audition's features that you might find useful is the ability to split an audio clip into several different frequency bands so you can process them separately. It also has a nice noise reduction feature. Cakewalk software and Adobe Audition complement each other very well. If you had the bucks I'd recommend getting both of them.

IMO you should start looking for different kinds of VSTs. What you want to do can propably be done in Audacity or whatever VST supporting audio editor. There are several VSTs around that can manipulate sound per frequency etc.

Pitch shifterr like Melodyne can give great results when you play with the formant settings. That would be my absolute #1 suggestion. I've had some fun with Melodyne Plugin just tweaking my speech unrecognisable but still keeping it defined and understandable. Combined with FX like phasers, distortion and of course EQ and compression that gives you an immense playground to roam.

Also effects like Artillery or Effectrix can lead to something. They allow you to pile up FX in a very creative way. They are designed for music but your purpose is to tweak voices with imagination as the only limit, so you could try just anything.

Cakewalks Z3ta soft synth can also give interesting FX to vocals/speech.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
