Thanks everyone - Album is complete!
Hi everyone, Thanks for all the help I've received here. Both in this forum, shaping a couple of songs that I could use as baselines for the rest, and in the HomeStudio and Producer forums for teaching me how to engineer and mix! If anyone's curious, "Love Is Enough" is streaming here: http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/3392098 For the record, it's all performed live except for the drums which are programmed MIDI. No autotune or quantizing. I used Sonar Producer 8.5, Superior Drums, and a Boss GT-8 for the guitar sounds.

Ok good try, I like the slide a bit George Harrison like. I like the style of vocal, sounds almost english. The drums are not mixed very well though and some of the sounds you have used for drums just don't sound right. what drum machine are you using. I am using SD3 at the moment and it comes with an excellent arrary of samples. Good Try Peace

Thanks guys! Dlogan, it IS a great feeling. Ben, the drums are sitting exactly where I want them - how would you have improved the mix? And I'm pretty sure i've got SD3 too (might be V2, but probably 3)... As for the English vocals, that makes sense. Probably 80% of the music i like comes from there (including me, originally).

Way to go, Matt! What a great accomplishment! :) Vocals might be a bit pitchy in a few spots, but they're strong otherwise. Cool tune and great playing!

Congrats, Matt. I'm listening through the catalog, and hear a tasty blend of influences, including the Doors, Pink Floyd, and Dire Straits. In particular, I hear a heavy reference to Mark Knopfler. Take that as a compliment, as I am a huge Knopfler fan. That said, you have your own style, with a bit of a punk edge. I like the overall darkish undertones. Wow. Boy, that one's dripping with sarcasm, eh? Love it. How are you handling distribution? Individual songs via Reverbnation, or have you printed CD's?

I think it's great. IMHO I like the mix, feel, and vibe. I wouldn't change anything. It has its own personality. Be proud of this!!!

interesting stuff, I hear more Bowie influence than anything else... actually. while some vocal tacks are better.. some could definitely benefit from a bit of pitch adjustment... ..it's not a dirty word. :o) Congrats, good job !

Wow, thanks for the compliments! Janet, Thank you. I rehearsed the vocals heavily, and showed a huge improvement over my older recordings. But they're still pitchy in places - i think it keeps it human. Robert, MK is a hell of a compliment. A couple of people have noted it, (i'm assuming more vocal than guitar talents...). Believe it or not, Wow is NOT sarcastic - It's written about Tim Booth, the singer for James, after really analysing their "Getting Away With It Live" setlist and lyrics. Very eloquent. For distribution, i'm new to ReverbNation and will see how it goes. They sell MP3 downloads as well as pre-packaged CDs. I've ordered one myself to see how they're packaged, but it hasn't arrived yet. The download sales seem reasonably good, at 256k. Bill, thanks! I'm very proud of it. One Reason, I have a portrait of Bowie tattood on my arm (along with K.Richards and B.Ferry). I only cared to get the vocals to "a certain point" of perfection. I'd rather have a few pitchy lines to keep it human. I took lessons for 16 months to learn to sing better, i really have issues with pitch adjustment. But again, thanks for the encouragement and compliment!

Sounds very nice Matt. The songs flow in a nice consistent manor. The vocals are real for sure, occasionally too human but I think I'd prefer it raw than treated. Welcome to the night time reminds me of something from Ric Ocasek. Cool. What to say - nice heartfelt tune ( not crazy about the ummmss ) Don't pity me - Really like the organ on this one. This is a really nice tune. Swagger and twirl - great tune - All that mattered - nice acoustic on this tune. (Probably a bit long) Home - another really nice tune. I like the hook. This dream - a real rocker. Vocals really work well on this one. Burn - Another great tune - Vocals really work well on this one as well! Wow - nice intro... very interesting concept for a song. I like the uniqueness of this one. Love isn't enough - Good ending song. I never listened much to U2, but I believe there is a strong U2 influence in your music? Overall a very nice compilation of music and it's obvious that you put a lot of hard work into this endeavor. I really enjoyed listening to your work. You are quite talented.

Congratz, Matt. I only had time for one, and the player put up 'Welcome to the Nightime,' which I liked very much. Vocals sounded fine to me. Well written song too.

Sorry I haven't got back to you and your question about the drums, it's just that they are a bit thin but on second listening I suppose they work (it's the toms, they sound too electronic and some of the snare hits they feel really thin like they haven't been compressed properly or they have been EQ'd wrong, try putting the tap sim on the snare, if you have any questions regarding the drums, tell me what you have used in terms of instrument, compression settings and EQ settings, I just tought of it then, even try tuning the drums differently, listen to the track and retune the toms and the snare, this might be what I am hearing). Don't worry about your voice, the voice is great, the inflection gives you a real personal feel and I would go so far as to say it make the song. Sometimes even the best singers and me included use the talking singing voice to help put accross a certain emotion and for me this is what your vocal does. But a really great job, it is nice to hear real songs and real people, keep it up!!! Peace

Old55 – thanks. From the comments so far, I’ve already succeeded I think. Tap – a breakdown! Someone who listened to them all. Cheers! Benzofog – that’s a twisted little song – made my brother-in-law a little nervous… That’s the drum sound I was going for – loose and live. Philz – thank you. I had to “pinch” a little to get those high notes in the verses… OneReason: Cheers! BMMT: I didn’t know you could tune the drums in Superior Drummer. I’ll look into that for the next project. Bapu: Thanks. Nice dog.
