What do you guys think about the G&L 3 bolt neck?

I've noticed a nice old G&L guitar for sale and it's got the wood grain just like I like it.

The thing is it has the 3 bolt neck plate.

If you are looking at an old Fender the 3 bolts are warning sign that scares you off. It seems hard to get the neck to sit as solid as the 4 bolt versions.

Was is any better with the G&Ls?

Thanks.

best regards,
mike

Don't know, but you might want to check here:

Some prefer just a two bolt neck.

No he had friends in high places.

Electrical storms was his problem.  He should have had anti-surge protection fitted.

Yeah, I have one of those old 3 bolt strats... bought it new at the time.
It has stayed together fine, with the "micro adjust" and all.... but I probably wouldn't go for it now if I had the choice.

Hehe...  First thing I thought of as well!

Personally, since I prefer guitars (and basses) that are neck-thru, I would be VERY sceptical about using one with only a three-bolt neck.  But that's just me.

I've got a 3-bolt Telecaster from 1974, and there's a bit of play.  Apparently a decent repair shop can insert a shim that will reinforce it, and i keep meaning to have that added.

The lack of a 4th bolt wouldn't scare me away from a guitar that otherwise i liked, but given the choice i'd take 4 over 3.
