SONAR X1 video format support

I have a Canon Vixia HFR10 and it seems to record in AVCHD format which is better than MPEG quality, but SONAR X1 doesn't support it. even though I have not tried using SONAR X1 and video, I am guessing you could export it like a music video. Is there a way where I can get SONAR X1 to import my AVCHD videos? Converting them degrades the quality.

well I haven't tried converting yet because I am wondering if there is a way I can somehow use my video as it raw in AVCHD. If i have to convert I probably would have to use AVS4YOU but I am not planning on converting

Not in front of my music computer right now, but I think you're out of luck with that format. I could be wrong, mind you.

I use the CIneform HD codec to convert HDSLR MP4 footage to a more easily played codec.

The Cineform company has a codec specifically tailored to footage from AVCHD MP4 sources.

It costs little bit of money but it works very well.

I used a free trial to make sure that I would like it.

You may also want to simply use something like Quicktime Pro to do a conversion to an easy playing low res format that you can use for reference while scoring to video.

If you actually intend to edit the video at some point you'll want to use something more like the Cineform HD or Apple ProRes codec because it preserves the picture quality.

Cineform is so effective with AVCHD that the Go Pro camera copnay just purchased the Cineform company as an asset. The GoPro all shoot AVCHD h.264 MP4 video and it all needs to be converted before being useful to an editor. Go Pro bought the best codec they could find.

    You may want to to.

    Good Luck!

    best regards,
    mike

Oh and BTW converting the AVHCD to Cineform HD will NOT degrade the quality... it actually is an *upres* using less CPU and MORE disk space...  it takes a format with marginal color space and up converts it to 4:2:2.

I've had great success with the H.264 codec. A video editor I've recently worked with insists on using the "iPod" preset from Final Cut Pro which produced a file with the .M4V extension. SONAR doesn't recognize this extension on its own, but if you select "all file types" it'll show up and you can import it. I've found the file size to be quite reasonable and easy to scrub through. As I recall I've had success in renaming the file to make it a .MOV extension which worked just fine and a few less steps in SONAR to import.

I'm a fan of QuickTime Pro for these types of video conversion situations as I'm not a video editor and don't have direct access to one.

I had the same issues with a Canon LegrIa HF20. Make life easy on yourself, buy Sony Vegas for 50 bucks and use that to handle your video files. Do your stereo mix in Sonar and bring it into Vegas as a wav file. Easy as pie, download a free trial and give it a crack. Good luck.
