Can I use a NAS for storing and accessing samples in realtime

When I store the samples I want (to access from within SONAR via a plugin) on a NAS is the transfer rate fast enough on a Giga network to play the samples in real time/

You can benchmark the NAS (just like any HD).
What type of polyphony are you trying to achieve?
NAS wouldn't be my first choice for high polyphony.

I personally would not recommend using a NAS for streaming samples realtime.

Even gigabit communications wouldn't give you the throughput necessary.

You'd be better off with eSATA and perhaps USB3.0 devices.

USB 2.0 doesn't quite cut it (for me at least) for streaming either.

I asked the same thing maybe 3-6 months ago, errm I wondered how fast / slow it was compared to USB2.. (don't have esata or usb3 on laptop) . I am going to wait a bit and just buy a bigger internal drive for the laptop.

Does the laptop have an express-card slot?
If so, pickup an express-card eSATA controller.
That'll allow you to use a high-performance HD.

nope.. sorry, I should have mentioned that :) . So a bigger internal drive is the route I'll take.. partly due to komplete swallowing up 1/3 of a drive hehe

One drawback with the bigger internal drive is DAWs work MUCH better when the OS and "data" are on separate drives (especially when using streaming samples, etc).

    Another issue is heat.

There is a HUGE performance gain when using more than ONE drive and configuring appropriately.

yep, sure on a desktop which is how that's setup. but I don't have that luxury with my laptop config I have. it's an i5 which is decent enough.. until I finally sort out a new desktop (thanks to intel's little "mess" up at the start of the year)

So you're i5 doesn't have any SATA ports?  You MIGHT be better off with an external USB (even 2.0) drive than one large internal drive to handle "everything".

it has an internal sata drive , but no externals , hence why I'll get a 1tb for it. I was trying to figure out the true "vs" thru put / transfer rate.At the time I assumed I'd be using a newer desktop soon so wasn't overly bothered.

So what ports do you actually have on the i5?   Most i5's I've looked at do have at least one SATA (eSATA / USB combo actually) port.
